The car its wrapped in doesn't matter. Just has to be a good drivetrain. Sub 1k, prefer lower mileage. Tje cheaper it is, the further we are willing to travel. Located in Charlotte NC.

This is for next years challenge car (78 280z, drivabeater style. Possible widebody)

So, what do we have?

As you know the LT1 is gonna be the easy part, it's the 6-Speed that everyone thinks has a bar of gold hidden inside that'll cost ya.

They seem to forget it can't be used behind the magical LSX without a pile of cash being thrown at it.

I doubt it will stay south of your budget limit but.... here is a safe bet. 98 manual trans wearing a SLP intake lid... 98

It's not helpful and based exclusively on my anecdotal and brief CL searches, but it seems that the rattiest of ratty 4th gen lt 6 speeds are still 2-2.5k. A good deal for a donor imo, but more than you want to spend. I researched this fairly recently after coming to terms that I like the engine in 4th gens a lot, but don't ever think I could get over the styling. Solution? 4th gen drive train in a third gen.

There was a Z28 6 speed with 152K miles on Boston CL last night for $1700. Just looked again and its gone. Thats about as good as you are going to find without hitting a salvage auction.

I am about to list a 1998 ls1 t56 car for 2k. It has headers and a k&n lid. Runs well, 128k.

2nd gear is not working. I will post pics tonight.

Isn't 2nd gear always not working in older T56s?

Will current Challenge recoup rules allow for a $2k driveline donor and still have enough to build the rest of the car?

We've got 50 bucks in the z car. May be able to pull it off.

It depends.

If the donor comes with enough parts to trade, you could recoup up to $1008.50, which would leave you $1025.50 to build. Tires and certain safety items are budget exempt. So, I'd say yes.

If, however, the donor car is a piece of crap with nothing of value other than the drivetrain, you're gonna have a hard time.

Theoretically, you could build a Challenge car with a donor car that cost more than your base car (and more than $2K), but you can't spend more than $2017 on your base car.

128k, ripped drivers seat, clear coat is messed up, small dent in passenger door and rear quarter

^That is really tempting as a challenge car. Last one I bought wouldn't go in 5th.

Still can't bring myself to run a basic car again Camaro, E30/6, Miata, civic or mustang. Could use the drivetrain in my E320 wagon for next year.

Pimpm3, Oh wow, you sure come up with some good stuff. The want is VERY strong on this one! It's truly amazing how you have become the supplier of a major % of challenge cars and donors.
