I performed a leakdown test and everything was perfect so I was very relieved that the head gasket and head are fine. I rerouted the hoses again and flipped the radiator to position the inlet higher up but nothing worked. The engine would get hot, coolant would not circulate and the rad cap would pop and release the pressure. I removed the water pump inspection cover and saw that there was no chain on the sprocket. Fortunately, I had the necessary parts to fix it and now everything is working perfectly.

Really glad you didn't have a head or head gasket issue.... you've worked through a lot of issues lately!

Yes, it's been a rough season and I'm not sure why. Each thing that has gone wrong can be explained but why they all happened this year and nothing went wrong at all last year cannot be explained. On the upside, when it counted, the car has performed. Like at Springnationals, when I came in 3rd. Yes, it went into the occasional limp mode, but still held together when I needed it. I hope it holds together at Nationals, too.

Besides water pump drive repair, was any fossil fuel shamelessly burned in anger on the thin strip of asphalt this past weekend?

In reply to 759NRNG:

No, my Hoosiers have just over 90 runs on them and I want to save what's left for testing in Lincoln prior to Nationals. I will be going out to a local event on the 20th as a final shakedown because it takes place at a bigger site where they might even have some sweepers. I disassembled the Verano engine head today and it's pretty clear that I must port it. I'm surprised how much room for improvement there is in the ports. I also took the Verano block in to get the Nikasil coating re-done because it was damaged.

Hey what determined the elevation of this engine in your chassis.....differential centerline?

In reply to 759NRNG:

No, I asked a bunch of other EM competitors what their ride height was then determined that my ride height would be 2". I mounted the motor so that the lowest part of the oil pan was level with the bottom of the frame rails. I could do lower if I had a dry sump system.

If going to a dry sump, does the flywheel/bellhousing diameter come into play in all this.....going lower?

In reply to 759NRNG:

Yes, the flywheel often becomes the limiting factor in how low you can go. The hardcore car builders will put small diameter multi-disc clutches in and relocate starters and crazy stuff like that.

I couldn't get any decent pictures with my iPhone but the head, intake and exhaust manifolds look way, way better with some porting. I am confident of a decent power boost just from what I did. Here is an intake manifold port before and after.

From the intake port pics, it looks like there was an o-ring land that no longer exists after the porting job. Interested to see how that works out.

Some bad news. The Verano engine has significant pitting in the cylinders, likely from corrosion due to sitting in a moist environment for a long time. I still could salvage some parts off it for spares, except the turbo because the hot side is cracked. Here's a picture. It's a housing that contains the hot side scroll so the turbo is not worth rebuilding.

Fortunately, a new K04 Turbo is only $600 but it's disappointing that I couldn't salvage this part from the junk motor. I paid $1500 for it and all I can use are the sensors, manifolds, crank and head.

Like I haven't had enough drama this year, now the car won't start. It was running perfectly the other day but I went to start it and it wouldn't fire. It has no spark and the injectors aren't spraying fuel but it does crank. I was convinced it was a bad battery but a new one didn't solve the problem. I have checked all fuses, checked grounds, partially pulled apart wiring harness to look for broken wires, checked connections on all sensors, checked dtc codes, reloaded tune and numerous other things and it won't fire. In HPTuners you can permanantly get rid of certain DTC codes so I reprogrammed it to show any and all codes and one extra one for IAT showed up, but I doubt that a bad IAT sensor would cause the car to not start. Jerry from Bad News Racing remotely linked to my laptop that was monitoring the engine and couldn't find any reason for it to not fire, either. After a number of times trying to start it, I realized there was no fuel in the tank but I filled it and manually triggered electric pump to build pressure and it still won't start. It definitely has plenty of fuel pressure in the rail but the injectors aren't opening. This will seriously damage my chances at Nationals in 3 weeks ;(
