No, they just cribbed their manufacturing process.
Years back we had an equally gross one in our you-pull-it. Somewhere I have the shift knob and an emblem. They were the only salvageable parts on the car.
IIRC I remember reading something about all of the earlier japanese cars having rust issues due to the quality of steels which they had available. Who knows if it was true or not.
That being said, I do know that the Tinworm does love it some Datsun.
