5th gear nut? Are you talking manual trans? Most of the V10s had 4 speed autos (47 or 48RE depending on year) behind them, so that would be the most common / likely trans to use for this project. Manual would be an NV4500, IIRC.

I had a line on front cut of a ford v10 van with trans, harness, computer for $400. Everything i read about them made me leave it where it was. I want to build a v10/12 something but ls swaps are such the potent little easy button that it's hard for me to consider anything else for budget racecar builds.

Yes. Mentioned back on page 1, apparently the V10 was available with the 5 spd manual as well, although I've personally never seen one. My own experience with the NV4500 was behind the '95 Cummins I had for about 5 years.

Not entirely relevant to the thread, but relevant enough. 2nd gen rams tick all the boxes for me lowered down. Different wheels and not black paint and it would be perfect.

Yes, I would agree. If it's a transmission intended to always operate locked or if it's some crazy extra stronk lockup clutch, go for it. In any other case though, the lockup clutch probably won't survive much.

The Dodge auto trans is fine. There is no point talking about swapping in a 727. The stock 4spd IS a 727, with an overdrive hung off the back. The 1st three gears are basically identical as far as how it's put together and how strong they are. And unlike a 3200 rpm diesel, you aren't rpm limited to the point that you HAVE to put full power through overdrive to complete a 1/4 mile pass. So the overdrive section, if it isn't already failing or burnt up, just doesn't matter for a challenge car. So you essentially already have a 727 torqueflite. There's no point to talking about swapping out that auto for anything else unless it's a manual swap, and even then that would only help if you were bolting a manual to it that wont add a full second of shift time to your ET. Which the stock 5spd will. So.....

It's a pointless swap performance wise but I don't bought the Ford V10 would be cool in a streetrod with an open nose, 10 injection stacks and 10 zoomie headers.

Is the O/D in the 47Rx's weak? Is anyone working some wizardry to turn these into six speed units (727 + Overdrive in/out function)?

In reply to pres589:

Not really weak, but not as strong as the rest of the trans. The 48RE OD unit is stronger than the 47RE one (47RE can be upgraded).

It wouldn't make a great 6sp with the 0.69:1 OD unit. Stock, you've got the following gears: 2.45, 1.45, 1, 0.69. Making it a 6sp by splitting every gear with the OD unit would give 2.45, 1.69, 1.45, 1.0005, 1, 0.69. So you'd really only make a 5sp because 2nd + OD is the same as 3rd with no OD. And even then, the extra gear wouldn't help much.
