I had my first, and probably last, ride on a real trials bike today.

It bit me hard only moments after I decided that I'm too a old and fat to be riding a trials bike, and headed back to the road to bring it back to the owner. The course was about 3/4 of a mile of fresh cut medium tight single track. I'd ridden about a dozen loops on a 300 2t Enduro earlier in the morning. Half way into the second loop I knew this bike wasn't for me. I'm not sure exactly what went wrong, but I probably forgot there was no seat under my fat butt. Anyway, my foot snagged something on the trail, I got pulled back a bit and whiskey throttled a bit. I went down hard on my left hip right at the transition from dirt to tarmac and now I'm sitting in hospital 4 hours from home with a fractured hip socket and a morphine drip. Dr said it's not a bad fracture as far as these things go, and should heal completely with time, proper care and PT.

Now to find out if afflack pays like they claim.

And now the Ortho Dr says he won't release me tonight. Saw something on the CT he didn't like.

Hope you heal quickly. I've gone down a few times but never that bad.

One of my long term projects is an old Suzuki trials bike, I rode it around as a teenager and fell off a few times but that was 40-some years ago and I was a lot more resilient than I am now...if I ever get it put back together, it's only going to be for joy rides around the neighborhood.

I wasn't even going all that fast the "event" started. Like a pro on a MTB could have ridden right past me.

Oww...hip! That's a rough one, work the PT as much as they let you. I've know a few people to not bounce back well from just light slips.

Ouch! Hope you heal up quickly. As they say, there's two kinds of riders - those who've crashed and those who are going to.Now you've got that over with.

I've been riding dirt bikes since I was a young teenager, and have quite a few street bike miles under me too. I voluntarily gave up street bikes when I moved close to Philly due to all the careless cagers. The dirt bike bug has never left me alone, and I've done whatever I can to get a short ride in here and there when possible. Pit bikes have been good at scratching that itch recently, but they aren't a true substitute for real dirt bikes.

Anyway, this is my first and only trip in an ambulance in my entire riding career.

Dr changed his mind, I'm getting kicked out at midnight, after they said they had to keep me, and I sent my second driver away. Whiskey Tango foxtrot?!?

Joke was on them, they couldn't discharge me if I wasn't ambulatory,I could stand on crutches last night, but couldn't go anywhere due to exhaustion. Now I want to get the heck out of here but they can't get to me due a surge of early morning customers.

It happens. I've come off a MX bike at highway speeds more times than I want to think about, and jumped right back on the bike, but my worst crash was at relatively low speed and I more or less just fell over in a deep sandy turn.

Ouch...

Like some others have posted, my worst crash was low speed, in dirt. Been down twice on the street (left turning cager and target fixation in the mountains - both early on, when I was new to riding), once drag racing, and numerous times on the road race track. But it was the 10mph bounce off in the dirt that finally broke something... 1700 miles from home...

Best wishes for a quick recovery!

Coughing feels like a gunshot to the lower back side of my hip and spine. Not fun.

Ortho Dr at home said not to use the 800 mg ibuprofen because is can inhibit fractures from healing. Ok, but what about all this swelling and inflammation? Isn't that where a lot of the pain comes from?

She also said it's bad enough that the hospital should have admitted me, not just a simple crack, but a crack from top to bottom with a few small radial fractures. I need to go see a pelvic injury specialist. Probably won't require surgery, but does need specialist attention at least for a second opinion.

Don't even get me started on the insurance company.

In reply to Nick (Bo) Comstock:

It's not Aflac, my regular insurance company plays the "must be in network" game, and there's nothing in network anywhere near me*. Dr says I need, must have, in home care and professional medical transportation, ins is trying to not supply it.

  • I don't understand how a business who's center of gravity is in Pennsylvania has an insurance network that has so few in network resources in PA? The company health care advocate has been useless so far too.

Well it looks like I'm going to be doing lots of watching for the next few months.

I was doing the two-hour asra Team Challenge endurance race at Loudon New Hampshire. Entered as a solo participant. Things were going pretty well made my one mandatory green-flag Pit Stop recast told my crew I'm going to ride through the end of the race with about 45 minutes left at the time. Things were going well when I did the pit stop I was in sixth overall but I didn't know where I was in my class I was pretty happy with the sixth overall since I started in the second to last row on a lightweight bike.

With 8 minutes to go I went down and turn 11. It was a low side but it was a fast one not a nice easy set down it tossed me into the ground pretty hard. I saw pavement pass my face at least twice quickly lots of pain in the shoulder. Came to a stop did the look around to make sure I wasn't going to get hit or run over started to get up had the wind knocked out of me and my shoulder was not feeling well. Corner workers showed up told me to stay down for a minute. They asked me if I wanted an ambulance or if I wanted to walk to the Enfield Medical Center. I could see the medical center from where I stopped and I had plenty of energy and was able to get up with their assistance and walk to the IMC period but in doing so I could feel my clavicle moving around. After pulling me out of my leathers which was lots of fun but not as painful as the last time I broke a clavicle, they did some poking around and said they were sending me for x-rays. They gave me a ride to Concord Hospital. The doctors they are also wanted to do a CT scan to check the head since it was plenty of rash on the helmet. They were also notes from the IMC that I was a bit incoherent I don't believe that to be correct they may have been confused. LOL. So the CT scan came back great, when you have little brain matter there isn't a lot to go wrong. The x-rays on the shoulder not so great. Going to need to see an orthopedic surgeon I'm thinking they're going to need to go in and put it back together like they did for my right shoulder.

I've been released I'm back at the track it's 11:25 p.m. I'm sleeping in my 1985 xplorer class B motorhome it's a bit tight but it's what I got at the moment. Fellow Racers that I put with it going to pack all my stuff up in the morning my girlfriend is picking up a friend they're going to head to the track and drive my stuff and I home.

I am very surprised that I'm not in more pain after seeing the x-rays but I don't think I'm going to get a good night's sleep but I'm going to give it a shot.

So the guys pick me up at the hospital and gave me the really bad news. Well I was six overall I was actually leading my class at the time. Depending on how they do the scoring I may still end up with a win as they backup one lap from the red flag lap.

I will still have to break the news to my parents tomorrow which is going to suck. I'm going to hear a lots of stuff like I did the last time "haven't you had enough, aren't you getting a little old to be doing this"

It's tough to explain it to them. I am far from the oldest guy here. Things that you're passionate passionate about, or what keep you going through life keep you in shape keep you from going nuts. When I broke the right collarbone in 2007 I got lazy heavy and popped a disc in my back. When you stop doing what you love you get old fast.

PS the girlfriend's not very happy either. That's supposed to go to a wedding on Sunday. And I'll be on vacation next week with her. So I am in some big doo doo.

Sorry about all the spelling mistakes run on sentences and whatever other grammatical errors in the above. Not having use of one of my hands makes it hard to type and this Android phone doesn't do well with speech to text. No it's not the drugs. They sent me off with 2 Percocet and a prescription for something better for tomorrow. Well I'm going to try and get some sleep alarm set for 3 to town another to Percocet hopefully that'll tide me over till I can get the prescription filled.

If you're interested in seeing pictures of the previous repair job from 2007 on the right shoulder you can go to grrrip.com. click on pics and clips, and there should be something there for the clavicle from 2007. I know it's there my buddy pulled it up at the hospital to show doctors the previous work.

You know what also sucks? Every time you're about to doze off to sleep you go instantly into a dream where you're in a massive tank slapper that ends in a high side which causes you to jump which of course causes sharp pain in the broken bones.

And maybe this should go on the first world or minorrants when the hospital gives you to Percocet to get you through the night, and they put it in a child proof bottle and you only have one arm to work with.

Now I just need to wait for them Percocet to kick in.
