Spending a Few Days on Our Triumph Spitfire

Finally blessed with a little free time, we spent a few days just sorting our little Spitfire. First we had a tail light issue to figure out. For some unknown reason we kept blowing fuses and losing our taillights. replacing a wire that had a bare spot solved that problem.

We also worked on the tuning and drivability. Changing carburetor jets, adjusting timing and test driving until we had the car perfect, made all the difference.

The last thing we would need to do was fix the third gear synchro. We did this by swapping the overdrive transmission we had laying around for the one that was in the car. We also installed a new clutch while we had the transmission out.

We were really starting to like this car and in just a few days and a few hundred dollars, we had it sorted and driving quite well.

Hi Tim, I remember reading a little about your spitfire but I apologize for not remembering that much about it. Do the Webers make a difference on a stock engine and are the innards of the engine stock? Dave.

wannacruise, The late Spitfires had a single Stromberg carb that was a compromise at best. The UK cars had twin SUs, I believe to the end. Switching to twin SUs or a single, or twin Weber set up, does make these cars run nicer.

I am not sure what has been done to the inside of our engine. I was told it had been "gone through" and "hotted up" by a former owner, but who knows what that means. When we got it, it had the the single DCOE 40, which we sorted and it runs great now.
