The occasion? Iron Maiden.
After piddling around with some local sea trials following the engine rebuild on our 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera, we finally took it on a real trip: Ormond Beach, Fla., to Atlanta and back.
The occasion? Iron Maiden. Another stop on our journey? The shooting location for a recent Church’s Chicken commercial.
The pre-trip prep was fairly easy: wiped down the car with some quick detail, checked the tire pressures, and installed fresh Bosch wiper blades. (While we were packing, Debby was churning in the Gulf.)
The car ran just wonderfully during the entire trip, although the a/c had some trouble keeping up during the northbound leg. Cloudless skies and 95-plus-degree temps were a little too much for the system. It was a tad bit cooler on the way down, and things inside the cockpit were more comfortable.
Our best fuel tank average was 21.2 mpg. Don’t forget, the engine spins north of 3000 rpm to keep up with interstate speeds. We didn’t notice any oil consumption.
Even though the car did well, we have a few things left on our immediate to-do list. We have fresh Bilstein shock absorbers to install, and it’s time to rebalance the wheels—we recently lost a wheel weight.
