Meet the 1987 Mercedes-Benz AMG known as the “Hammer.” Then a tuning house, AMG built these cars to reach a 181-mph top speed–which, at the time, surpassed that of the Ferrari Testarossa.

Believed to be one of only 13 examples built by AMG North America, the Hammer is based on a W124-chassis Mercedes-Benz and powered by a special AMG 6.0-liter V8 capable of nearly 400 horsepower.

Sure, the AMG surpassed the Testarossa in speed, but it also surpassed it in price. When new in 1987, the Hammer cost $1,460,000–approximately $3.8 million in today’s money.

Find this 1987 Mercedes-Benz AMG “Hammer” up for auction from Broad Arrow Auctions, with an estimated winning bid of $575,000-$625,000.
