One of three Briggs Cunningham Jaguar E-types at the 1963 Le Mans

Jaguar built just 12 examples of the Jaguar E-type Lightweight Competition. This one was destined for the Briggs Cunningham team, and was raced in the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Despite future USAC and SCCA champ Augie Pabst and four-time SCCA champ Walt Hansgen behind the wheel at Le Mans, the Jaguar dropped out early due to a gearbox failure. Hansgen and Paul Richards later drove it at Road America and Briggs Cunningham himself competed with it at Bridgehampton.

Right after its racing career ended, the Jaguar entered Cunningham’s museum in 1963, and then passed through the hands of several collectors. While the E-type still retains the factory-issued aluminum bodywork and alloy engine, it also has many of the original smaller components since it did not race for long. In fact, this Jaguar E-type Lightweight Competition is purported to be the most original remaining.
