Privateer Porsche 906 with an interesting provenance

The Porsche 906 won its class at many of the big races of its day–Daytona, Sebring, Monza and the Targa Florio. This made it an enticing vehicle to buy for privateers and this car, Chassis No. 906-140, which retains its factory frame number, aluminum chassis tag, and serialized magnesium-cased racing gearbox, is a prime example of that.

Earle M. Chiles, an heir to the Fred Meyer supermarket chain in the Northwest, bought this 906 new and campaigned it in SCCA and USRRC events mostly in that region. However, with drivers Mike Fisher and Pete Lovely, the team earned a third-place finish in their class at the 1966 Road America 500. Later on, in early 1967, Fisher crashed the car into a police vehicle at Portland International Raceway, causing front end damage. Chiles decided to sell it after that.

Monte Shelton bought the car from Chiles and raced it. Shelton’s claim to fame is a third-place finish in his class at the 24 Hours of Daytona, with co-drivers Bruce Canepa and Rick Mears. The current livery reflects what Shelton ran during 1967-1969. Chuck Stoddard, founder of his namesake Stoddard, a famed Porsche restoration parts house, also owned this vehicle.

Find this 1966 Porsche 906 for auction at Broad Arrow Auctions, with an estimated value of $1,600,000-$1,900,000.
