This 1990 BMW Z1, a 32-year-old car, has so few miles that the seller warns that some countries may actually consider it new, for tax purposes. Why then, does the odometer read 999,997 km? BMW often delivered its cars with “less than” 0 km on the clock to account for the travel prior to delivery.

Jen Winther, a Danish race car driver who participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1983 to 1986, took ownership of the Z1 on February 23, 1990. The seller says it had been driven once and then preserved thereafter. The current owner purchased the Z1 from Winther in 2014.

Only 8000 examples of the BMW Z1 were built, each one powered by a 2.5-liter straight-six paired with a five-speed manual. This example has a Toprot exterior with a dark grey Nubuck and camouflage interior.

That is crazy, has the engine been regularly run, has gasoline been in the system , when and for how long each time ?

What about the rubber , hoses, seals ?

it's not all going to be like new unless all the bits that can dry out over time have been regularly treated ...

Good questions. I'd definitely look those items over as time plays a factor in addition to mileage. From the additional photos on RM Sotheby's, the rubber items seem to have held up well from far away, but I'd give those items a close lookover before even thinking of putting it on the road. Either way, it's a rare opportunity to get a 30-plus-year-old car that's basically new - except for the items that age out.
