Before the iconic Martini Racing colors, the distillery’s branding was a bit more subdued, with just “Martini & Rossi Racing Team” lettered on the front quarter panels. This Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Coda Tronca was one of those first two race cars to receive Martini sponsorship.

The team debuted in the 1962 Daytona Continental 3 Hour. Paul Richards drove this example to a third place in class, two spots behind his teammate and class winner Charlie Kolb. Richards and Kolb would later race the car at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

Today, the Alfa Romeo no longer wears its racing livery. It’s the 200th of 216 SZ examples built, and just one of 41 Coda Troncas, which feature a Kamm tail and front disc brakes. After being acquired by the consignor, the Alfa Romeo underwent a restoration that included equipping it with the correct AR00120 engine.

Find this 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ ‘Coda Tronca’ for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $400,000-$500,000.
