The "some rust" comment definitely is cause for concern.

. "Some rust" especially on a predominately fiberglass car. That has "Parts Only" written on it.

Dang! Just bought my oldest a Jeep, she is about to go to college, and my youngest gets her license two weeks from now, so now is not the time to buy another car, but this would be awesome!

With one exception the least expensive C5 I could find last night was nudging $8K, so my question is whether the C5 is inherently worth that extra $6K?

I too have a similar ongoing internal debate. It depends really on what your ultimate goal is. You certainly could build a nice, fast, handling performing c4 but you'll likely end up with much more in it than picking up a high mileage c5 and likely end up with not much more $$$ into the c5. Especially if you're thinking of a lsx swap.

I guess my threshold would be about $6K. If you're gonna spend more than that on a c4 you might as well start looking for a cheap/salvage title c5.

But if you want some fun cheap performance and only have $3-4,000 to spend you can piece together a neat little c4.

Assuming comparable condition, the C5 will be more refined, have less electrical problems, better balanced, and likely faster stock vs. stock. The C4 generally gets the nod for having better seats though. The C4 does have one performance advantage over the C5 though - it's smaller. Although that's probably not enough to give it an advantage anywhere other than possibly a tight autox course.

I'd also bet that $8k C5 is closer in condition to a $3500-$4k C4. However, from a performance standpoint, really the main thing separating a lowly '84 from a ZR1 C4 is HP(presuming you're starting with a Z51 or other performance package)...and HP is cheap with an SBC.

Really, whether starting with a cheap C4 or C5, the time/money it needs will likely be comparable between the two, so it's just a matter of what your total budget is. Though if I had $12-$15k I'd be going straight for a C5 Z06!

Here's a perfectly bad idea for someone(else)!

Seller said: This car got enough water in Katrina to make the security system think it was being stolen. It started the next day and many times since but will only drive in limp mode. The dealership said they will only reset the computer if all electrical wiring and relays are replaced so I bought a new wiring harness and was having it professionally replaced but the guy that was doing it quit or got fired and didn't quite finish it. The car was never claimed on insurance so the title is still clean but any Katrina car has to be sold as scrap or parts but it could be put back on the road with some patience and work. I just never got the time to finish it and now I need it out of the way ASAP. $1800 OBO
