I figure someone in this group must have one of these gems in a closet.  Located in NE FL but can pick up at the Challenge or pay for shipping.

Really?  Why not the normal trans?

The normal trans doesn't have a replaceable bell housing.

NA trans (bell housing is part of gearbox):

Turbo trans (bell housing is removeable):

Man you rotary people have to deal with a lot of stuff. Ok back to the drawing board.

I might have supply of regular transmissions we can discuss.  I was saving a few for the "5th gear swap" on a miata if I ever found one I was going to keep.

That would be an na trans.  Not a turbo trans and thus not work in this situation.

What are you trying to do?  I can probably help you figure out what you need to do.

I'm trying to find what driveline I'm going to put in my next build.  It should be sub 1500lbs.  I'm wanting 150 NA but maybe the ability to FI later for 250ish at the wheels.  Current front runners are 13B, Saturn LLO, and 4G6x.  Final decision most likely to be made on budget reasons and what falls into my lap than a "Oh that's the perfect engine".

Gotcha.

GM3400 LA1 engines are pretty light, pretty compact, and CHEAP - like 200$ or less.  I know they fit in the same place that a rotary fits.....

13B would give you the HP, but the torque is severely lacking.  250 HP would be a good bit of work even Turbo with the 13B (requires LOTS of fuel).

You can make a Zetec from a Ford Focus bolt up to a Lima 2.3's T-5 with a some effort with use of the 2.3's clutch, pressure plate and starter. The Lima's flywheel works with the Zetec but then you lose the 36-1 on the back of Zetecs flywheel. Probably could just use all zetec with the Lima starter...

The top holes on the Lima's block bellhousing pattern has two different sets. The top two match the T-5 bellhousing, and the lower two match the classic Kent/Xflow/Zetec/SPI/CVH. My thought is machine out about half the thickness of the bellhousings flange by the two top bolt holes. Cut a plate of the same thickness that covers the two sets of holes and bolt all three together. The real early Zetec in the Contour/Mystique had the starter below the center line of the crank and then moved above where the Focus' is located. So you would have a gap when using the T-5.

They weigh around 250lbs with an automatic flywheel, assorted brackets, complete from throttle body to exhaust manifold, coil pack, and partially full of fluids. My local car-parts.com has a 200k mile one for $150. The two part oil pan looks to be modifiable to get some kind of dry sump DIY'ed.

You would need a stepped dowel or redrill the smaller holes in the block.

The SVT version is 170 hp and has a lower intake manifold that lends itself to ITBs, but that engine is an interference when the normal one is not.

I'm probably forgetting something.

I still want to see Team Stampie do the Saturn LLO with a T-5, so that gets my vote.

Lol I wondered when you would chime in. Would a LLO and RX7 NA trans float your boat?

And here I was hoping that rotary pickup you had a- still existed, and b- you caught a case of the dumb and went over to the REALLY dark side where the f2t is king. I can still dream.

Ka24de or sr20de would both fit the bill.  A sr20 can easily meet both power goals as can the ka24de.

You can get fwd or rwd transmissions for either.

It gets better... there are like seven different transmissions with removable bellhousings and they are all different, and the interchangability is not always bidirectional.  Five of them existed before 1978, leaving mostly just the Turbo II and FD which are sort of interchangeable.

Does this mean you don't want Seth's transmissions?  Because those are smoothcases and I go through them faster than oil filters...
