Hood and fenders off, as I suspected the fenders alone are really light.

Down to here.

453 hours.

You're almost down to the pile of stuff that doesn't need to go back on.  You just need to build a lightweight frame to hold the hood/fenders/cowl/doors/and top half of the rear clip.  All that other stucture is uneccessary gravity you don't need to carry around.

Could you take a page from the TransAm years and have it dipped to lighten the tub?  It worked for Mr. Penske.

Those stamped ribs all over the place look like a really good guide- give them an inch margin to each side, and an inch margin from the nearest bend, cut everything else?

Well, we did end up cutting the areas out between the stamped ribs. (And also a little more)

That move dropped about 100 lbs.

Next we skinned the doors for 30 more.

Keep pile:

Current weights as follows:

Ian and I both worked about 5 hours yesterday and I did one Friday morning. So +11 hours to 464.

I dunno if I'll be able to make that happen THIS year haha.

But I did give Ian a scraper and put him to work on the sound deadening on the outer door panels. I bet he got 1-2 lbs off each door for a 10-20% improvement.

Almost forgot to mention, we found a 1974 penny, and a box end wrench INSIDE the passenger rocker. How they got in there I'll never know.

With the penny being 9 years younger than the car, that suggests the penny found it's way in AFTER the car was built, but this is basically a sealed chamber under the door. The box end however you could convince me it fell in during production.

In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :

Someone here could probably date the wrench to a rough 3-4 year timeframe with pics.

That should be a noticable improvement in accelerative capacity of your vehicle.

Well now I'm very interested to see how you get the bodywork to hover in roughly the right position.

Current plan is to give them callsigns and order them to fly in tight formation.

Bluetooth body mounts!

What's left of your steel body currently weighs less than my fiberglass body.

Got a sweet new build table delivered last week from mofo. (Thank you!!!)

Spent about an hour monkeying around trying to get loaded on and mostly centered.

And then got the body mostly back to where it was before. Being able to brace up from the table and not the floor is really nice.

Next up, make a race car floor.

465 hours.

Get me a pic of the pucks you are running with a measurement to be sure. I have a sheet of the stuff and can cut you a set if it's the same as mine.

Figured I should finally get around to this. Sent you a PM.

It is going to be emotional for me the first time I don't experience that. But in time, I think I'll be able to get over it.

Ok, real talk time. There is a test and tune day close to me on July 16th. I'd love to get this to that, however, there are some issues.

1. This weekend is taken - I have a funeral to attend.

2. The following weekend is taken - annual fishing trip with friends, and we had to skip last year.

3. The 3 following weekends are taken because our family is driving out to Montana for a 2 week trip.

And there are no more weekend days before July 16th.

So, no more messing around. Time to focus exclusively on things that need to be done before this car can drive again. I believe that list to be:

  • Make a cowl mount to mount the cowl to the frame above the steering wheel. (I'm realizing now how major of an improvement this would have been, even with the old body)
  • Fasten (weld or rivet) the cowl to both fenders. The cowl will be the upper fender mount.
  • Finish right rocker assembly in square tube
  • Finish left rocker assembly in square tube
  • Figure out and fabricate the best way to attach the body to the square tube rockers along the bottom edge (at this point I'd still love this body to unbolt/unpin/etc). This will be the bottom rear mount for the fenders as well as the bottom of the door and bottom front mount for the rear fenders.
  • Build rear fender top mount right
  • Build rear fender top mount left
  • Build rear fender rear mount right
  • Build rear fender rear mount right
  • Fasten (weld or rivet) right door to front and rear fender
  • Fasten (weld or rivet) left door to front and rear fender
  • Add gas
  • Air tires
  • Figure out trailer (long story)

Yikes.
