I did NOT want to work on the Accord today for no reason that I can explain. I'm going to mess with the Miata.

I fabbed up this little guy. Fabbed being a very generous word. Those are magnets on the back.

It went behind the tombstone and holds my phone where I can see it when I'm trying to get somewhere. It works great. I should paint it.

Cleaned stuff. Put the eyeballs back in. Put on the shift knob from bmw88rider. It feels nice. Thanks for that.

Then I tried, repeatedly, to order a roll bar. First I thought my phone was being a jerk by not getting signal in the yard. It does that. Mike at FM couldn't hear me very well and then the call dropped. Poop. Drove to the gas station. Call wouldn't go through. Drove to the gas station by the freeway. Call went though. Mike noted that their phone system was being moody. Then the call dropped. Couldn't connect for a few minutes but kept trying. Talked to Mike just long enough to ask him my questions, but not long enough to get answers or order the roll bar before it dropped again. Came home and sent an email. Maybe things will work better this afternoon?

We'll need to find a way to cover that ball in some kind of leather/cloth/suede quickly... or we're going to lose the skin on the palm of our hands in the summer and fall...

I usually kept some kind of a cloth over the ball in the STS car if i took it to work... otherwise it stayed in the garage.. and how low it was to the floor also probably played a part...

That's why I don't use metal shift knobs anymore.  The one in my 911 is made out of delrin.

I just want to comment that Flyin' Miata is cool. I finally got on the phone with them and talked rollbars. I was annoying and asked a LOT of questions. In the end they said the simplest thing was to just call Hard Dog and order it from them so that's what I'm going to do. M2 double with harness tabs and padding.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the rubber seal that goes around the rear window on a hardtop? Some work going on in that department. Lots of stuff happening really, but that's one detail that I need to get sorted.

Thanks man, that's what I thought it was but it's a little hard to tell. It looks like I just pick out as much of the old sealant as possible, put in a new bead, and install?

EDIT: I think it's actually  NAY1-63-930

I've been playing with the hard top the last few days as I wait for the roll bar to come in. I was picking at the remnants of the plastidip when I remembered how easy it came off the Honda wheels with the pressure washer. 10 minutes. Done.

The paint that was on there was bumpy enough that it was going to show through vinyl. I played with a bunch of methods of getting the crappy paint off. In the end the best thing was 500 grit on the sander with water flowing. The stock paint was already dead so hitting it a bit isn't an issue.

I mostly need to finish up around the window and wait for the vinyl to come it. This is going to be my first experiment actually wrapping something. Should be fun.

I suspect it will be of the Type II variety... but I look forward to being proven wrong

Your welcome for the shift knob. It came on Atomic Betty so it just seems right to have it on another Miata. I forgot I tossed that in the box honestly.

Grib tape works good if you are looking for something to cover it. The same stuff you would use on a bat.

If you need anything from the rollbar let me know. Thats 95% the same bar on the miata I just bought from Doc. Only difference is single vs double diagonal.

I have this bar sitting in my garage..... with pad.   I'm also selling my Miata.  I'm in DFW.

Roll bar is in. It looks like the previous one had straight rear legs instead of the current bent ones. I only had to drill one new hole though and didn't have to fight with it too much. Need to do a final torquing and interior reassembly. Sitting flat on the pan I broomstick with just enough room to fit a finger between the broomstick and my helmet. I suspect that this is designed so that if you don't hit the hard top as it sits then you broomstick.

Go to the dollar store and buy a pair of baby socks. I have the too hot/too cold issue with the shift knob in my MINI  and the socks work.

Car has been trapped in the Grosh by lack of motivation and weather (without the top on) and just other stuff. I finally buttoned it up today and even though it's raining I took it out.

It's cold enough that the cold idle surge is there, I should think about that. Otherwise it's great.
Watching the weather to see if it's worth going to rallycross on Saturday. Driving in mud sucks. Might stay home and see about wrapping the top.

Texas clay mud like what's out at the Brianne corn is a PITA in the wet and in recent years, when it rains right before the events, they are more often cancelled because the place turns into a lake every time it rains. and they try desperately to get rid of the water quickly and it's just so hard.

Couple of things to get ready for rallycross tomorrow. Firstly a headlight was out. I haven't replaced a sealed beam in a while.

Before I put the hard top on I pulled the plastic panels off. This is mostly because they're nice and I don't want to ruin them. Spacecadet is still bumping his helmet on them just a bit.

I also put in a new Frankenstein on the drivers side and re-tightened the one on the passenger side. Both of the captive nuts for these have broken off.

The top is a bit rattly on the bolts. There must be a way to properly deal with this that I don't know about but I'm hoping that you guys will tell me. For tomorrow I cut a couple spacers to move the plate up and snug the top down. Everything is tight.

Snows are on, car is packed. Crossing my fingers for lots of dry tomorrow.

Good luck out there tomorrow. I had it all planned out to go tomorrow but this week had other plans. Sunday night I went searching for my helmet to no avail. Turns out it got donated to the dump by swimboangry. Then yesterday car threw code for failure to reach operating temp and now I have no functional temp gauge. Oh well I’ll be actually living local for the next race!

The hardtop latches used to have thicker layers of rubber or coating where they engage with the frankenstein bolt when they were new. I used to cram a carefully cut piece of rubber hose in mine, pry forward  and tighten.

Hey that’s no good! Tell her that even Marie Kondo says not to get rid of other people’s stuff because it breeds resentment. I can’t imagine throwing out someone's helmet! Ugh!
