I'm looking at an Audi TTS with the 2.0 TFSI engine. I've read reports of oil consumption but can't figure which version (although prior to mid year 2011 seems to be a cut off) that has this problem or how common the problem is.

Anyone with experience able to chime in?

Oil consumption is hit or miss with these engines. It is usually caused by a bad pcv or a bad valve cover. The valve cover has built in passages and gaskets that can go bad, the only fix is to replace the cover. Make sure the timing chains and tensioners are solid, they can and will go bad, then you'll have a bad day. Stick with good oil filters (Mann, Mahle) and a VW502 approved oil. Mine seems to use less if I run Castrol 5w40 Euro.

You should also check for Carbon Build-up on the intake valves; depending on the mileage of the engine you are looking at.  The B7 RS4 was horrid for this, while the 2.0L had similar issues.

By contrast, my ‘07 GTI 2.0 TFSI, did not consume any oil.  It was chipped with APRs software, FMIC, upgraded HPFP, and a cold-air intake.  Frequent oil changes were my primary means to combat oil consumption.  Fantastic engine!!

Did yours ever suffer the cam follower wear? I looked that those 07-09 for a while and that was a notorious issue.

There was some scoring on the cam that we noticed while changing out the HPFP; it wasn’t too bad.  Overall though, I didn’t pull the valve cover off to check.  Not as helpful; sorry.

Cam follower wear for the HPFP was sorted out during the timing belt years of this engine. 2006 and some 2007 cars had the lobe material too soft. After a revision to the intake cam, that problem mostly went away. Inspect it every 30,000 miles or so. Again, proper oil used with a 5,000 mile interval is your friend.

Just finished this job a few weeks ago on my recently acquired 2007, swapping to a later cam. I’m very pleased so far with the motor and how well it hauls around 4000lbs of Passat.
