The 96 has a V-4, keeping it. I've seen then turboed, injected and supercharged, they're near bullet proof. When it overheated during an ice race, roll into the pits and throw a shovel of snow in; get back out there. Try that with your aluminum Honda.
Well, Ian went to Queens this morning and cut a deal for the Saab 96. Seller owns a body shop, car was left for a clean up about a dozen years ago. Time to move it. It has paperwork but the owner died some years ago. Comes with some receipts and a factory shop manual. Surprisingly clean for something 46 years old.
Got it for $1200, I pick it up Friday after dropping the 900 off at his house in Connecticut.
That heater core is crazy looking.
You have to look at some recent old Wheeler Dealers- they did a 96 there. Nicely done, too- with an unusual source for the front windscreen.
Turning a free 900 into a 96 looks like a worthwhile adventure to me.
Bearing in mind that my ideas and moods swing with the tide, I'm leaning toward a Carrera Panamericana tribute car.

Why stop at a tribute? Make it go and run it- it would be perfect. IIRC, there's a "lesser" class that's more TSD than high speed rally that you could run for a lot less expense.
Needs one of those cool vintage roof racks. Front shovel needs "Svenska Aktie Aeroplan Bologet".

Remember: Swedish car. They generally had good heaters. Hot weather ventilation - eh, not so much...
I wholly approve of a 900 for a 96 trade. Of course, a 95 would have been even better. 
Hit the road yesterday at 5am, dropped the 900 off in Connecticut then headed to Queens to pick up the 96.
Ian seems quite happy with his project.
PITA getting the trailer near the car buried in some body shop's yard.
My vocabulary is too limited to explain driving through Queens with a trailer.
Finally GTFO of Dodge.
Oh yeah, got home around 3pm; unloading I noticed my jack stands were missing but there were two cases of assorted wines in the back of my truck. 
Ian was in DC all ast week and couldn't work on the 900, dancing between car-time and wife-time; he'll learn.
Replaced the headliner and package tray with "Swedish Tartan" material. Not as gaudy as you think.
Nice - looks like he did the door cards as well.
Wet sanded the hood and applied my interpretation of the Saab Griffin.
