I'd buy this if I wasn't already overcrowded on cars. Very high mile, but runs and drives. Doesn't look terrible. "Smoking" could be an issue, or might not be that bad. 270,000 miles is a lot, but hey; It made it to 270,000 miles so it must have been taken care of.

Smoking tend to just be a bad air oil separator especially if it's rapid onset...but with that many miles it could be any number of more serious things.

Don't let it be an issue. I've done 4 fly and dives, and only one was more than the asking price for this car, and that one had more miles.
just do it.

What is the big deal? 1000 miles or 2000?  It's just driving.  Get on the freeway, set the cruise control, put on books on tape and go.   ( Use your local library rather than buying them) I use Mountain Dew and sunflower seeds as a supplemental  keep awake and alert method. Drive about  400 miles then start looking for a gas station.
Yes I tow an unknown car home rather than risk driving them.  OK time to be honest. I buy junk and they probably don't run which makes them way cheaper. But I can do a thousand mile trip in a weekend.  16 hours there, buy,  load. 2-3 hours 16 hours back  that leaves you several hours to pull off on a roadside rest spot and nap

Exactly. Also it is common for these flat 6s to smoke for a moment on start up if they were just run momentarily before being parked or if they have sat for a long time.

For AOS testing check this:
