Hey everyone! Long time lurker here (I know, same old story) who finally made an account earlier this month to message a member about a car they have for sale. It's taking me a bit longer to sell my truck than expected, so I thought I'd see if anyone here is interested. My plan for this truck eventually was to put a beefier trans in it and get it set up to be a tow rig for the big Healey vintage racer I'm building. Plans change, however, and I've decided that I can't wait any longer to start getting some real seat time. The truck is a '65 as the title states and overall is extremely clean, but isn't without it's faults. I have owned it since last September and it has been nothing but reliable since.

General details

  • Clean title but has a mileage discrepancy
  • Fleetside shortbed with no rust on the sides
  • 400ci small block (out of a '70 Caprice), bored .030 over, rebuilt in '89. I have all the receipts. Holley carb with automatic choke. Ceramic headers.
  • Original (I assume) 3 speed on the column
  • Drop spindles and disk brakes up front (4WD wheels up front to fit) - 6 lugs all around
  • Air ride on all four corners, conservative c-notch in the back
  • Typical C10 interior - Mexican blanket on the seat. The red vinyl on the seat is in pretty good shape other than a hold/tear on the driver's side

Good

  • Rust - There is almost no rust (other than superficial stuff) on the frame - it's unbelievably clean. No rust on the bed sides. No rust in the cab corners although it appears that one or two mounts were replaced at some point. It's extremely clean.
  • It runs extremely well and has been dead reliable for me in my ownership. I drove it last year September - December until there was snow, woke it up Easter weekend this year and drove it about 3 times a week until about 2 weeks ago.
  • Cab lights, big mirrors, gun rack
  • New bed floor - the previous owner made the bed out of wood from a local theater I believe, gave it a thin coat of black stain and left the strips bare. It looks awesome in my opinion. There is a hole cut for the rear end to come up through when the truck is aired out.
  • A bunch of recent maintenance including gear oil in the rear end, axle bearings, ball joints, disk brake conversion up front (as covered), new shocks all around, new turn signal cam, and more than I'm probably forgetting. I've got receipts for everything done recently and some stuff from the 80's.

Not so good

  • Rust - There is some rust on the driver's side rocker and less so on the passenger side. There is also some rust in the floors but nothing alarming
  • The right front airbag will go down over night
  • There is a small leak coming from a junction in the hard brake line running over the front cross member Both of the previous two, I believe, are a function of the previous owner hastily getting the truck ready to sell (it was part of our deal to have the brakes and suspension work done before I bought it). They are certainly issues, but have not gotten in the way of me driving it.
  • In city driving, no matter the traffic or weather conditions, the truck runs at 185 all day long, it's awesome. Up on the highway, however, it starts to run a bit warmer, which is to be expected to some extent but I've never given it a real test. I had it out for a 45 minute ride and it was at about 205. It should be looked at but I rarely have it on the highway so it hasn't been a priority.
  • Sometimes under heavy load or at highway speeds it will pop out of third gear. (I've actually spoken with the owner who put the engine in and had it painted blue in the 80's and he said it did this even then)
  • It marks its territory a bit from the small block and a tiny bit from the rear end.

I truly do love this truck, but just really need to be on the track already.

Price is $10K OBO, pics are below and feel free to shoot any questions to me via the forum or call/text at two1six5four4eight2one5.

Thanks, - Andrew

Cleveland, OH. Sorry I left that out!

Also - I spoke with the gentleman who owned it in the late 80s actually. He bought it in Knoxville, TN, brought it to Ohio and had the small block put in as well as had it painted blue.

Im amazed to see it actually has the 400 in it.....I thought everyone scrapped those blocks after taking the cranks.

Pretty well done truck that just needs the little stuff by the looks of it.

Yeah. I'm certain a bunch of you know a lot more about small blocks than I do but from what I understand, the 400 has fewer options in terms of heads because of the coolant passages(?) and for that reason they're often overlooked for builds.

Thanks for the comment @WOW Really Paul? - that's a great way to put it. Nice looking ti by the way.

The 400 needs steam holes, which can easily be drilled in any aftermarket or OEM head for any other small block.

Easily my favorite displacement for gen 1 small blocks.

Ah yes, steam holes. I was headed in the right direction at least.

Ehh, my favorite displacement sbc is one my friends & I threw together with the parts left over from a junkyard 383 build which we blew up at the strip in a '66 Chevelle a decade ago. Take a 400 block & 350 crank and you end up with a 377 de-stroker that will rev to the moon. The 377 we built is still together to this very day inside a competitive local dirt track car. I still get a chuckle out of that, as we tossed it together with all used parts in a shed with a dirt floor....

Sorry to bump twice in a week, but I'm headed out of town for a couple days and may not have great internet. The auction ends Sunday night. Tell your friends!

I should have added that my reserve price was $9,000 and I will take that in an effort to get into the car I want.

Come on, someone has got to want a cool truck like this!

Bump!

It would appear that the car I really wanted is sold, but I'd still like to get into something track-able. So...I'm now open to trades if anyone out there is interested! Preferably prepped for track use (suspension and brakes most important, cage especially if a convertible) but absolutely must be road legal/have a title.

My tendencies lean toward old British or BMW but I'm pretty open. E30? E36 M3? Spridget? Miata?
