What’s in a name? Well, in the case of the new Lexus UX, quite a bit, actually: ‘UX’ in Lexus speak stands for ‘urban crossover’.

And even though you won’t be crossing over much aside from railroad tracks in an urban terrain, the UX signals the next evolution in crossovers: dropping the off-road pretense entirely. From Lexus: “The Lexus UX is designed for the modern urban explorer seeking a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on luxury driving,” said Chika Kako, executive vice president of Lexus International and chief engineer of the UX. “We designed the UX to appeal to young buyers who seek not only what is new and exciting, but what is also relevant to their lifestyles.” This then, is the starter Lexus for the buyer who finds the Prius a little too on the nose.

Our tester was the UX 250h, though the UX is also available in UX 200 guise, sans the option of AWD and the 24kW hybrid drivetrain. While the horsepower figures won’t be setting Lexus dealerships alight, the fuel economy numbers might: 41 city 38 highway should you feel the need for AWD, like ours.

The U in UX stands for UGLY as in the entire Lexus line.  I don't believe there is an automobile line manufactured today that meets the standard of ugliness as Lexus does across the entire breadth of their product line.  And this one is no differnt.
