With our insulation and A- and C-pillar trim installed on our project Mini Cooper S, we could now install the front and rear windshields. With new rubber seals and chrome strips designed to hold the glass in ordered from Mini Mania, we just needed some plastic glass tools, strong hands and a little luck.

Asking our expert body guy Tom Prescott over to help us made the job a lot easier.

Everyone has an opinion about how to best install glass. We installed the seal around the window, lubricated that seal and slowly worked it into place with plastic glass tools.

The Mini Mk 1, like ours, has a smaller rear window than later cars. We had to cut about four inches out of the seal and glue the seal back together. We used 3M Urethane, which is designed for this purpose.

Once the glass is in, you have the trying job of installing the chrome “keeper” strip. Mini Mania sells a $25 tool for this job. We did not have this tool so we used our hands, which got very sore after while. After much grunting and cursing, our rear glass was in. We were lucky to have all original, correctly date-coded glass for our car that was still in great shape.

Watched Ed China do this on an old Wheeler Dealer episode. He had the tool to insert the plastic trim. IIRC he used para cord to get the glass into the rubber seal. Bob's your uncle.

We did the back window without the tool. What a difference that cheap little tool made.

Don't know how it would work on a Mini but we used to do much the same with VW windshields: Put the seal on the glass, lube the bejeezus out of the seal AND the opening, but wrap cord around the seal channel. Then push the glass into the opening and have a helper pull the cord; installing the glass. Beetles had relatively flat windshields...
