In reply to maseratiguy: I have a buddy who has been a Lotus freak for over forty years. He even still has a twin cam Europa he bought new. Plus he's been through at least a couple of older Elans. But any time you see him anywhere but at a car show, he's probably driving the Elan M100. He thinks it's the most enjoyable car he's ever owned.

SAAB was an aircraft company. Aircraft companies traditionally leave the engine design and assembly to someone else.

When they finally got around to redesigning the Dolomite motor in the 99 for the '73 model year, they did themselves a huge favor. Ask the man who's rebuilt both. The SAAB version was FAR stouter with a much better head.
