With the new piston rings in hand from Ireland Engineering, we quickly got to work reassembling our BMW 2002's engine. The rings were installed on the first-oversize pistons by hand; then, with a ring compressor, we tapped the pistons back home into the block.

From there, the process went quite smoothly: We used Ottoco MLS multi-layer head gasket, which doesn't require retorqueing. It's great that we can use modern technology in our 40-year-old engine. With the head on, we set the valve clearances at .008-inch with a feeler gauge and took care of the rest of the assembly, including the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.

Next up—installation!
