Looking to step up to 17" wheels for our Volvo 940 Lemons race car. Due to the backspacing/offset needs and 5x108 pattern of the car we're pretty much resigned to using wheel spacers or adapters in any case; so the original application and lug pattern essentially doesn't matter (as long as it's 5 lug for ease of adapting).

Where should I look for (cheap) OEM wheels in 17x8 or 17x9?

I've already stumbled upon some Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango options in 17x8, both in 5x127 pattern.

What else is out there, for the budget conscious?

I did totally space on the C4 Corvette wheels, thanks for the reminder.

I've seen a couple sets of BMW wheels listed locally with poor description, have possibly identified them as Style 159 in 17x8, seems like decent availability?

Late c4 sawblades 17x8.5" fronts, 17x9.5" rears, and if you're lucky you might find 17x11" ZR1 rears.

Pretty much all front drive style Fords with five lug are interchangeable with Volvo.  So hunt for Focus, Fusion, etc.  Spacers still needed, yeah.

17x8 Pegasus wheels also exist, but they tend to not be cheap.  Available as repops in the $250 range.

I THINK I have a way of running 4 lug hubs on the front of one of those, too.  Doesn't help the rear axle.

Zr1 wheels from c4 or 4th gen camaro. Came stock on some SSs and are cheap, even cheaper is the later ss 10 spokes. 5x4.75 and 17x9.

In reply to Opti :

Be careful on these, SS wheels are 17x9 and ZR1 wheels are 9.5. I know, as I ended up with three 9.5" and one 9" that I now need to replace lol

As far as I know all BMW wheels have a 5x120 bolt pattern.

C5 Corvette base model front wheels are 17x8.5. I had a set of 4 of them in nice shape and it took me quite a while to find a buyer at $150.

Except some new stuff that's switched to 5x112.

If you want to skip the spacers, I gotta think there is something out there.  There are plenty of 5x108 cars, just a matter of finding the offset you need.  What offset range are you looking for?

FoMoCo had tons, including the 90s T-bird that might have a decent offset, and although they didn't have 17" wheels, the aftermarket did.  Jag S-type, X-type, and the X350 XJ were all 108mm.  Boxsters are 5x108.  Mostly full list here:  https://www.roadkillcustoms.com/wheel-bolt-pattern-cross-reference/5x108-wheel-bolt-pattern-5x108mm-5x4.25-inches/

What's great about Corvette wheels between C4s and C5s is that the offset is really, really high.  Base C5 wheels (front) are 17x8.5 at +58, and if you can score a set of cheap (front) Z06 wheels they're 17x9.5 at +54.  C4 wheels from 1989 through to end of production are 17x9.5 at +56.

That generous offset means you can make them fit however you want them to fit with spacers or bolt pattern adapters (if you're not having everything drilled to match the new wheels).

I've thought about grabbing a set to use as track day wheels for my GTI, as they're a perfect fit if my alignment is set for track-spec camber.

In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :

Offset is the problem; to fit an 8" wheel and a tire between 225 and 245 we need offset between -3 and -13 to not hit our front coilovers sleeves.

The rear us much more forgiving as far as inboard clearance.

Unfortunately most OEM 5x108 options are high positive offset.

In the past we ran custom Diamond Racing 16x8 -12 steelies, current fronts are BMW 16x8 et23 with a 1" spacer.

So far we're seeing a few BMW 17x8 options in et34, which would be perfect with a 1.5" front spacer and 1" rear spacer.

In reply to newrider3 :

Gotcha.  Yeah, none of the 17s in my list will help.  Closest is the Boxster but that's still high offset... and probably expensive.  Even the aftermarket is limited.

I do recall that as soon as Mustangs went 5-lug (SN95) they offered what the 'stang guys call the 5-stars on the GT and SVT.  They were a 17 x 8.5" with a +35mm offset (hope I'm recalling that right).

Mustang folks usually hate them because they're not particularly pretty, but those who read the fine print know they weigh in at about 18 lbs each.

That's a lightweight, OEM, 17 x 8.5, five lug.

I had those Mustang wheels on my FC, 17x8, 30mm offset, 5x4.5 and not heavy.

Would you be open to running 18s? Focus ST take offs are dirt cheap and have the correct bolt pattern.
