Well I decided to pick up a car for the challenge. I think my wife is great for not going over the deep end about it yet.

1986 Firebird, just needs a Member's Only Jacket!!!

Engine was toast when I got it so I dont know the condition of the tranny.

Pulled the pan and didnt see anything out of place in the fluid, was still red not burnt, car odo says 86K.

Trying to stay in budget, but dont want to put it in and have to take it back out again!!

Thoughts? Roll the dice, keep looking for known good used one?? Have a line on one that has been sitting for 10 years but owner says it worked fine...would the valve bodies stick?

Any insights or suggestions?

What's the probability of both the engine and transmission going out at the same time? Pretty slim, I would think. I mean, the car stopped because the motor blew, right? I would just put a new engine in and it will probably be just fine. In fact, I think it would have a better chance of being good than buying a new used transmission of unknown state from someone that "says" it is good.

Any suggestions on some sort of shift kit....seem to be a few different offerings at different price points.

Or is it not worth the bother??

Thanks, Dan
