I have a 2002 VW jetta 1.8T 5spd with 120k on the chasis. Last week the timing belt failed (not sure if it is a belt or chain?). Is this an interference engine? It has a new clutch (replaced last month). Does it pay to get the car fixed?

Yes, it is an interference engine. But if you're familiar with head work, it's not too bad a job to repair. Usually when they go (especially if it happened at speed) it will bend both exhaust valves and the center intake valve on each cyl., so order a timing belt kit, head gasket, 8 exhaust valves, 4 intake valves, and the corresponding valve seals and dig in! I just did one three weeks ago. It will probably be an expensive repair to have done, but if you're a decent home mechanic, $300 and a weekend will have it back in tip top shape.
