87 MR2 TPS switch? Mid-year change?

So pretty sure the TPS is causing the intermittent hesitation. My mechanic says they made a change mid-year production for my 1987 MR2 NA. My build-date is December 1986.

There's an early switch, easy to get and ~$75, and a later switch I need which is $300 from the dealer, and about $150-200 elsewhere. He says the connector seems to be the only difference in appearance, and might be able to make a jumper to allow me to use the earlier switch.

Anyone with old Toyota and/or MR2 knowledge know more about this? (At this point I'm willing to pay the berkeleying cash if it makes my car drive nicely for a change!)

Have your dealer run all the part numbers(or better yet find an online source) and see if any of them supersede to another........

What kind of TPS is > $100 without some sort of exotic car tax?

It's a zarking potentiometer, isn't it? Maybe with limit switches?

Check the boards at www.mr2oc.com as well, sometimes you can grab a part like that from someone parting out an AW11.

FYI, the 1985 TPS on Rock Auto is $160 and the 1988 is $60. Seems like you could do better there no matter what.

Toyodiy has a cross reference that lists 89452-20070 for all 3 chassis, all years, including supercharged. 89452-20050, which is also listed for 87-89 crosses to all AW11, 86-89 ST160 and 87-91 SV/VZV20 camrys. plenty of them out there in the yards

Hitting MR2OC after work, and I know there's a vendor on eBay with a crap load of assorted parts that's helped me out in the past.

I have a TPS from an '88 GTS coupe that will not fit my FX16. The car it came from had 87K miles on it. Let me know if you want it. Will sell for shipping + cheap (low ball offer accepted). For a fellow GRMer, pay me if it works.

The FX16 TPS takes a rectangular connecter. This one is more oval. Other than that, they look the same.

A Genuine Toyota TPS. Certain parts from them are just horrifically expensive for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the offer trucke, just picked up the MR2.
He bought a new TPS for the earlier models, and adapted it to mine. Said the wiring diagrams were nearly identical, the plug slightly different, and they made an adaptor. $114 plus labor, and hopefully we're done!

Sweet! Glad you have it going. Had the same issue with my FX16. It is annoying as can be.
