I have a friend with a 2000 M5, he said:

"ABS/check engine lights on, oil temp gauge goes to full in 30 seconds, won't communicate with TDOT's computer. Battery goes dead if it's not driven for a couple of days. 200,000+ miles."

I told him "I know some people" lol. Anyone trustworthy independent shops around Nashville I should direct him toward?

FYI he's not mechanically-inclined, so DIY is out, unless it's a no-tools job.

He's in the wrong car.  Sell it is the best advice.

I can't speak for Nashville -- I'm sure there has to be a good shop there.  In Knoxville, we have an independent BMW Bro shop -- Kadunza.  they do good work at reasonable prices.  He truly needs a specialist shop and needs to make a decision whether to marry that car for a few years to see a return on investment.  With the implicit neglect from all the problems listed, it probably also needs bushings and a cooling system overhaul.  Oh...and timing chain guides?

I don't know his story, but a good specialist shop and $10k will fix it right up.

I don't know the full story, but I think he's owned it for several years, and based on his FB post I think he got a bit of sticker shock from the dealer.

Im just hoping there's an alternate indie place he can take it for a 2nd opinion.

Pete, the communications thing may have a work around, do some reading in the link I sent.  The dealer may need to reflash the DME (may be under warranty).  Some have reported it still working with the engine on, but not with it off.

Thanks, I sent him the link above & gave him the TSB#, so hopefully that'll help with that part.

Oil temp gauge is a sender issue most of the time (link below)

or possibly this sensor as well

If the ABS and trac control lights are on, its likely the abs module that needs repair.

Your friend can't afford to keep a high mileage M5 as a dealer/indy will still cost add up unless he learns how to work on it himself
