When I try typing this into the car fax website nothing comes up....

384679M319855

I get an error message saying I need to type in 17 characters.

That's because standardized VINs are 17 characters. Car Fax isn't going to recognize older/imported cars with a non-standard VIN.

What kind of car is it?

I get the same error with my 75 MGB and 79 GMC Dually. Carfax only works on the 1981 and later VINs.

I did try my 81 Camaro on Carfax and came back with no records. Seems like the car was "off the grid" longer than I thought. Being a race car now, who cares?

Datsuns up to 80 I believe used 10 character vins, car faxing an older vin is pretty useless as any records that were kept were likely never digitized .

In reply to evildky:You are correct. My old 240Z was HLS3024661. Try to find that number on a Carfax.

A buddy of mine has #00076 Datsun 1500 and #00076 Datsun 2000. Carfax has not been around forever, so they do not have info on older cars. They work on 1981 and newer, but the information itself is only good from @1998 on.

Well unless Bill dies in a fiery explosion sometime soon I don't see your buddy getting 240Z #00076 any time soon. incredible get got the SPR and SRL with matching production number, and so low at that.

1969 Olds VIN character definitions

won't tell you anything about your particular car, but it's the best i could come up with. there should be a trim tag on your car somewhere that could be decoded as to option content, at least for paint / top / interior colors.
