It just seems that the exhaust manifold and downpipe of my old Saab Turbos are going to melt something. There is a heat shield in front of the battery but it does not instill much confidence. So how about heat wrap?

Yeah, looks bad there, eh? But the only things the heat will really affect are the RH inner tripod bearing grease and sometimes the upper control arm bushings cook. Not sure a wrap or turbo blanket is warranted unless maybe your batt. shield has rusted and failed (friend of mine repaired his with an old license plate -- works great).
For the tripod bearing grease, people often use synthetic; it's pretty common for the RH inners to go bad and begin to vibrate because the standard grease goes away.
I periodically inspect the upper control arm bushings to ensure they're not frying.
Also, you want a narrow battery in there -- it's not uncommon to have something too thick, causing the heat shield to come in contact with the elbow off the turbo and grind holes in the shield. I use Interstate MT-56 batteries, which are narrow (but have the contacts just behind the shield, not closer to the fender). Not sure if this is exactly stock but it's what my well-regarded local indy puts in c900s. Keeps the shield off the elbow.
Or you could coat/wrap everything...
