Before I join yet another forum - does anybody here have any experience with working on NSXs? Are they reasonably DIY-able or is it one of the cars which is specialist-only unless you have a ton of special tools and access to a lift?

It looks like my 911 is finding a new home over in the UK with a friend of mine so the thoughts are slowly turning to a replacement. Looks like we're either looking at another 911 or an NSX after the idea with the Caterham 7 did go a bit lead duck.

I don't know first hand. I know my friend who has one is mechanically inept and has still had no issues with the car. They are hondas so they seem to be known for being very reliable. They have a weird rim/tire size that can limit options

The "it's a Honda" part is what makes them attractive (snap ring problems in the trans non withstanding). I know parts aren't cheap, but that's fine if you don't need many...

I've heard of some plastic bits in the interior, or window regulator type stuff breaking but nothing mechanical or major. Someone around here has to know more :)

That's what I'm hoping for .

There's a used car lot with an RX-8 R3 just barely in my price range.... but they also have an NSX.

I would like to hear "The NSX is a maintenance nightmare", please.

Well, in contrast to the RX8, an NSX does have a timing belt...

Man the rx8 will be there go for the NSX!!!

Now if you want the RX the best bet is an S2 (09-11/2 body style) Best i can tell you is drive both though.

I've never heard that they aren't DIY friendly. I think you should get one and then if you find that's not the case sell it for what you paid!

I would imagine the hardest part of working on the NSX is the same for any midengined car.. getting access through the hole in the top of the car to do anything

I would imagine its a lot similar to working on a V6 accord, with the engine in the trunk.

The implications of relative reliability are hilariously misplaced. Excellent subtle joke there.

I work (at honda) with a technician who(used to work at acura and has over 10 years working with hondas) has worked on them and apparently parts are hard to find and aren't even very dealership friendly...lol . like when we get preludes , and s2000's at work, we can do ANYTHING to them , but even at a honda dealership things get difficult and parts do get hard to attain, but... on the other hand i own a 2002 tl-s and a LOT of parts between hondas( and acuras) are interchangeable and run of the mill and can be substituted ....

The problem with the NSX is that nobody wants an exotic with a functioning climate control system.

Nothing hard about it apart from the fact that it's mid-engined AFAIK.

The only thing I'd add is that they are aluminum, which means they dent easier. Don't ask me how I know....

I've owned an A8 for a short time so I am aware how "dentable" aluminium cars are.

Parts availability is obviously a concern if there are issues with that. I know that parts prices have a reputation for being on the high side, but I haven't checked how much on the high side compared to an a/c 911.

Not the fastest cars on the planet, but they look great and from what I hear are reliable. Parts supply would be my only worry, but they did make them until 2005, you'd think parts would be out there...

parts are expensive. Be prepared to wait for them when you need them. Nothing interchanges from other Honda's on these, they are unique and all alone.

But... change the timing belt every 10 years, replaced tires every 10-12k miles and enjoy.
