Attendance is falling and do it viewership.
Simple because nobody can relate to the race cars anymore.
     SUV's sell  do race those

grab new ones off the show floor. Strip out the interior. Put in safety gear.  And race 'em.
Win on Sunday sell on Monday.

Nah.  NASCAR's height of popularity was in the early 2000s or so and there was no more connection to street cars then than there is now.

I don't think anybody wants to watch a bunch of RAV4s and CRVs with CVTs and less than 200hp quietly run slow laps for 5 hours.

Maybe a Netflix reality show.  Seems like it's working for F1.

I find it hard to follow all of the cautions and breaks and who actually wins the event these days.

I will still watch the highlights, but it's just not for me.

That's why I was thinking SUV's At a place like Bristol on the dirt or Martinsville.  Heck bring back some of the old short circle tracks

     20-50 laps?
Will the Ford take the Mercedes Benz?  Is the Lamborghini going to last?   How about the Chevy?  Who has enough fuel to last non stop?  The Toyota could be sand bagging.
      No racing tires!!

There are some pretty fast SUV's out there.  Does Lamborghini still make one?  Mercedes Benz  An M5 BMW?  Lexus? What about Chevy/Ford/ GMC/Lincoln?
Not at Daytona Or  any super speedway.   Bristol in the dirt, Martinsville, some of the old tracks that were passed over for the super speedways.  1/2 mile?   road race, like Watkins Glen?
   Short events 20-50 laps.

To get to the kind of viewership level they had that point (challenging viewership for stuff like baseball and basketball) you need to go far beyond viewers who know (or really care) about cars.  Viewers like that are more interested in people.

That said, it isn't necessarily the case that it's possible to get that level of viewership back even the sport had all the same things it did then.  Niche interests occasionally expand out into a broader cultural awareness for a time and then go back to be niche after it's not new (to the average viewer, at least) any more.

If I ruled NASCAR I'd do the following:

Eliminate the absurd stages; either have heat races or get rid of the "stages" totally.

Take the downforce out of the cars; make them slide around more.

Get rid of the faux excitement; no one is fooled by the hype. Do what needs to be done to keep the racing close as it can be.

Restrictor plate races are a tough one; I suspect they are highly popular but they are also unnecessarily dangerous. There are better solutions.

Drivers always want more HP.  So give them 900hp, take away downforce, make it hard to drive fast. Let the teams build their own cars like before. Not this spec car crap, it's like an IROC car. Get rid of stage racing, fake cautions near the end of the race, but drivers will still cause their own cautions so I'm not sure how to stop it. I believe the teams need more than just one hour of practice before qualifying. For the super speedways I guess they need to keep them at current reasonable speeds. Although this pack racing is going to kill someone eventually. They can't keep having these massive wrecks and everyone walks away before the law of averages catches up to them.

Pay the teams more money so they don't need to rely on sponsor money as much. Tracks get most of the money now. NASCAR owns about 12 tracks on the schedule, NASCAR makes money for being the track owner and organizer. I think ticket sales are divided, track 65%, owners 20%, and NASCAR 15%.

This year the racing hasn't been great with the second year of the new car.

Nope, they are obsolete.  But I would want the engines stock.   Really stock.   It doesn't make sense to build powerful special racing motors then put restrictor plates on them to slow them down.
If Ford or Chevy engines stock is faster or more reliable why not show that in racing?

That would still be more interesting.  And it would sound freakin' awesome.  Imagine a field of 5.8l V12s howling around the track at 9000rpm!
