I've ALWAYS wanted one these . . . . I may have a line on one. The one I'm looking at will make a fine AutoX buggy until I finish the E36.

What areas I need be weary of?

Rust. Other than that, I hear they are about indestructible. 20R, I think, or 18R? 20R motor flowed better than the 22R, has a double row timing chain that doesn't have the problems the 22R has.

20Rs, mostly. And yes, they rust rather well.

Based on the pictures the seller sent me . . . yeah it has rust (driver door on the edge, hood has three good see through spots and some on the rear valence). I'm going haggle and see if I get it on the cheap.

I'd give it a shot, and I know nothing about these cars, but it sounds like they share driveline bits with trucks and other stuff from that era.

Be wary of rust. Especially that which is obvious.

Rust around the rear fenders, front subframe-body area. In the trunk there's the wheel well, and the two outer edges next to the body skin.

Should be an 18R-C or 20R. Can't remember when they changed that. Both are R motors: Heavy, but bullet proof unless you are trying to kill them. Torquey vs rev. But can be made to work if you want it that way.

Engine bay can swallow damn near any I4 you want to throw at at. I6s such as 5M, 7M, 1JZ and 2JZ can be made to fit. V6s and V8s? GM sixes fit easily. How can't they? Ford 5.0s are "commonish", but also the 1UZ fits pretty well too. The "Period correct" engine is the 18RG or the 2T-G. Neither were "officially" imported to North America as far as I know, but show up time to time.

Big knowledge base, lots of love. But again, get your tetanus shots up to date :P

It has a 20R . . . If I get it, I'm thinking a GM V6. I was on 1st Gen Celica look at the pics on the various engine bays for crossmember and steering arm locations.

Save the head, then. The 20R head on a 22R block with 20R timing components is teh rad motor.

Personally, I think it needs more 1uz. Guy I used to know put one in his Celi in place of the blown 350 HP 22R when he moved to the PRC.

In the door, the hood and other hidden areas

If it was running, I would've considered it. But as it stands, it's $1000 bag of question marks . . . At least if it was running, I could of sold off the good stuff with confidence.

In reply to Strike_Zero: Hey Strike_Zero I might have the '75 Celica project car U R looking for. It is our spare Chump car. It is a complete rolling body except for the RF fender (no interior except the back seat). $300

In reply to Dr. Hess: Hi Dr.Hess, the motor U speak of can be made from a stock 20R. Bore it 0.138 & U have a standard bore 22R. The only 4 years the 22R block will work on is 81-84. Toyota built the 22R w/the double roller chain the 1st 2 years 81-82. The chain set is the same as the 20R & is a direct bolt on for engines through '84. U will need to buy the oil pump drive from 82 & back to make it work.
