what is the lightest 3.0L or larger 4-stroke engine you know of?

 

the lightest I have heard of is the 60 degree Bowtie at around 270lb.  The aluminum block part number is 10051141.  I saw one on eBay about a year ago.  I've heard that block has larger Gen III 2.25" journals so it could be used with an LW9 80mm forged crank.  Together with common 89mm pistons, displacement is 3.0L.  Gen III aluminum heads from the L82/LG8/LA1 are supposed to fit.

The iron block in the la1 or lx9 still makes a pretty light engine.

340 lbs is what I found for internet weight fully dressed.

 

Aluminum intake and heads are stock.

I'll bet the engine for the Lexus LFA would sneak a peek in here.

TVR claims the Speed 8 (4.5 liters) is 267 lbs.

Cologne V6 came in with 2.8L (probably possible to make it 3.0L) and weighs around 300, but good luck getting decent power out of it.

The Buick/Rover 215 specs out to 3.5L and comes in around 300, but not an overly inspiring set of kit.

Nissan VQ35/37/38 tips the scales at around 315 lbs with some serious potential.

Well, I'd wager any of the 3.0 litre engines that were used in F1 from 66 on would be near the top of this list.

Judd will make you a nice 4.0 L V8  at 116 kg (110 kg for extra cost), 670 hp at 10,000 rpm too!

I was thinking Millington Diamond (aftermarket version of the Ford BDA/BDG engine) but they only go up to 2.8l.  They weigh "83kg undressed". 

 

I know Esslinger makes/made tall deck versions of the Lima engine that were in the 3.0-3.3l range (have heard stories of a crazy Mk1 Escort with a 400hp - pump gas, nonturbo - version) buuut I have no idea what they weigh.

 

Same for the crazy Volvo engines that are theoretically redblock based.

 

How big are people stroking Honda K24s?

I wonder if there are any of the aluminum 60 degree Chevy blocks from the 80s still kicking around.  They were used for desert racing IIRC.

 

Ooh!  How big can you build an aircooled VW?  That would probably be the kneepoint of cheap and light.

 

Not nearly as powerful as a Millington Diamond of course.  They're claiming 340-370hp and 285-300 ft-lb for the 2808cc engine, depending on spec.  (Now there's a raunchy four cylinder!  Stick THAT in a sub-tonne Escort MkII...) No price listed, but bare 2.5ls are listed at a hair under 20,000 UKP.

 I know I have seen 2600cc and larger ACVWs.

 

The Porsche six weighs roughly close to a small block Chevy.  It makes up for this by being very expensive.

Looks like Triumph makes a motorcycle with a 2.5L 3-cylinder engine.  I wonder if you can bore/stroke that to 3.0? :)

People have cut SBC's in half to build a V4. Doing that with an LS3 should be a substantially light way to get 3.1L.

if there were 4 aluminum block/head engines with the same 2.5L of displacement but in OHV v4, OHV v6, OHV inline-4 and SOHC inline-4, which would be the lightest?

I'd guess a v4, but maybe that's not right.  Is the only reason most 4 cylinder engines are inline is due to cost or are vibrations more difficult to manage in a v4 configuration?

Buick, Chevy and Ford offered V6s used in the Busch Grand National series in the late 80s-early 90s. I think they were all 4-4.5L. Not sure what they weighed, but they were getting 450+hp out of a naturally aspirated, pushrod, 2 valve V6.

GM's recent 4.3L Ecotec is basically 3/4 of an LT1. It's very compact and all aluminum.

I have an idea that keeps going around of running just the right bank of a 5.3.  Replace the left cylinder head with a blanking plate, block off the left side water pump passages.  ITB intake arrangement.  Keep the odd fire crank because why not.

 

If you can make 550hp-ish from a bolt ons 5.3, then 270hp-ish is perfect for my purposes.  And as a bonus, you only need to buy ONE cylinder head!  smiley

Buick 215/ Rover V8 comes in fully dressed at 320 lbs.  Bare block is around 60 pounds.  A decent 4.6L with a cam will make 300 hp at the crank no problem.  Above that number you need head work and the price goes up substantially.  Aftermarket heads are now available and I hear guys are making 500 to 550 hp out of stroker 5.2L versions.  My solution to big cheap hp in my TR8 was to ditch the Rover and install an LS3.  Complete trans and engine package with aluminum flywheel and clutch came in right at 600lbs.  Tempted to install a 5 speed and drop another 70 pounds.  Those TR6060s are heavy.  All that being said, there has to be some new engine out there that is even lighter.  Those ecotechs and others are tiny.

BMW N52 is 296lbs without an intake/header and a couple accessories, so should be less than 400 fully dressed

Considering who did all the work for that engine family, that was a Ford motor.  Just sayin.  (it was a 3.9, 4.0, and 4.2l motor)

The 3.0l from the LS was also reasonably light, but I expect something more modern would be lighter.  IIRC, when installed in a Miata, it was slightly lighter, even with the massive manual trans.
