The major survivors toured together last year for the 50th anniversary. As soon as the tour was over, Mike Love "fired" Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks (the original lead guitarist) and went back to touring as the Beach Boys with Bruce Johnstone. It was a great show, but you knew it wasn't going to last.

The more I hear pretty boy surfer music at car shows, the more I want to chop my ears off.

Now I have about 5 BB songs stuck in my head. Thanks. Time to listen to my Killswitch Engage station on Pandora on my way home.

Thinking I know a lot of car lingo - 'splain this?

Early 60's slang for a cool car or hot rod. Not many high performance cars from the factory in late 50's or early 60's (just before the muscle car start) so if you wanted a fast car you had to build it. Many of the hot rods coupes and sedans had chopped tops or cars were lowered hence the term "shorts"

Thanks for that. "Sharks" just made so much sense, it never occurred to me it would be "shorts". But it is when you listen...

'50s and '60s slang

i first heard the term "short" in Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and His Ol' Lady".

It's like, Santa Claus used ta have this really charp chort, man, y'know? It was lowered to da ground, had twice-pipes, candy-apple red and button tuck, ooh ooh clean!

Teh interwebz has it both ways. I hear sharks when I listen to it, and to me, it make more sense than shorts. After all, Stingrays are kinda like sharks. Who has seen two cool shorts at a street race?

It's shorts. And yes, I've seen MANY cool shorts at street races.

It's slang for a hot rod- originally a reference to the short wheelbase of '50's hot rods, but by the '60's it was a West Coast slang for all hot rods. They are California hot rodders, and they are not on the drag strip, they are on The Strip (Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood).

Your "sharks" argument breaks down in the next line of the song, "2 cool shorts standin' side by side, Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a 413..."

There is one Stingray standing there, but the other car is a 1962 Super Stock Dodge Dart with a 413 Max Wedge engine-a "413".

I'm of the right "vintage" to attest that "sharks" makes no sense.

When I was 11, my dad and I were at the Canadian national exhibition, walking past the stadium (which was a major concert venue at the time) as we could hear the band go on stage. Just then, a fight broke out at the entrance, and all the ticket takers ran over to break it up. That's when my dad grabbed me and said let's go. We ran past the fight, got into the concert for free, having no idea who was playing, and watched the beach boys. Four years later, my buddy and I were walking by exactly the same spot, when an old lady approached us with a story about not being able to go the the nights concert, and gave us two tickets for free, to see... the beach boys.

It could be argued that " Little Deuce Coupe" was the first "concept" album...all car related songs. Brian Wilson was/is a true genius. Predating "Sgt Pepper" by about 5 years!

There was a Beach Boys movie on Bio or Doc channel a couple months ago("The Beach Boys-An American family")...one of the Wilson brothers was (not really willingly) involved with the Manson family, actually moved out of his house after they took it over, stole his cars (one, I think, a Ferrari ) for drug money, etc.

If it's the one I saw it was cheesy but entertaining. The dad was portrayed as a nut job but he was a reason they first got going.

Probably the same one...Brian Wilson has the full sessions orchestra do "Wouldn't It Be Nice" over and over for about 18 hours...(Actually existed; they were called the "Wrecking Crew" and apparently worked for Capitol Records)

RAWR! Zombie thread.... I was never into internet radio stuff, but the fm reception is pretty weak in the garage and I have good WiFi. I was playing around with Pandora for the first time and after a few misfires I punchedin Ronny & The Daytonas for a station. Friggin awesome. It was biased towards the 60s car songs, but also played all the cool old songs they don't play on the radio anymore. I can't tell you the last time I heard most of these. Give that channel a shot next time you're feeling nostalgic.
