I am looking at getting MB Star for my car as it seems to be the only real way to get a look around all the electronics in my CLS550. One proper diagnosis can easily save me the cost of the unit.
What are the differences between C3, C4, and C5? I want to get one with all the cables the multiplex and either a PC or a dedicated Tablet type interface. The tablet interface seems to be more of a thing with the C5 whereas it looks like laptops only for the C3. The C4 seems to be somewhere in between.
These seem to range in price from $600 to about $1100.
Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated!!! What to buy where to buy and why.

I bought an OpenPort 2.0 for about $90 and then a download of Xentry/DAS/Vedamio from eBay. It will run as a VM in VMware player (freebie) on an existing laptop. I can read all the codes on all the modules and perform actuations and adaptations. In theory, I should be able to use Vedamio to do module coding, but I haven't played with that yet.

Thanks for the tip. I have toyed with buying one of all in one's but not knowing how long the old R will be around made it hard to justify the price tag.
I bought the whole unit from AliExpress, took a bit of fiddling but got it figured out. The forums at MHH Auto are your friends. I didnt want to run it on a VM machine so I did it the hard way with a dedicated install on a laptop.
I used the C3 version for my 2003 e55 AMG and it was ideal. The C4 I have heard is overly complicated if you don't need the features. The older cars don't gain anything by going to the newer versions in my experience. I initially had a C4 MUX and it fought me every inch of the way. The C3 was much easier to get figured out.
There is a difference in quality of the MUX depending on price point so I have heard.
