Sorry if some of you are at half-mast thinking of a 505 turbo wagon, but it's just a manual turbo sedan that's stuck in third. That said, it's still pretty sharp-looking:

I also found two diesel transmissions for sale not too far away. From what I can tell the diesel and the gas turbo used the same transmission (so did some Jeep YJs, but the gearing is different):

I've been reading some of the past threads on the Pug 505 and saw that there are special tools involved with certain repairs. If everything else on the car checks out, then are any of those special tools needed for a transmission and clutch change (might as well do the clutch while I'm under there)? Any specifics to watch out for? How are the 505s when equipped with winter tires?

There used to be one that raced with us. Over the years I think he hit just about every tree on the hill , but the car wouldn't quit. Nails pale in toughness when compared.

I loved those things when I was 15. I still like the looks, but the mechanics make me shiver in fear.

Can you even get parts for them?

Sourcing parts is a bitch, but if you have a good shop manual and an internet connection it can be done.

Start hanging out on 505turbo.com and do some looking around, it'll be a big help.

It was in one of the other Peugeot 505 threads, but someone on here is a big fan of them and said parts weren't too bad to get.

I would imagine the 505 would do well in the snow with proper tires. Probably handles similar (or better) than an E30.

I grew up driving a 1984 Peugeot 505 STi Turbo Diesel 5 speed. It was a glorious car and I would love another one as a fun toy.

It's still available, and apparently even driveable. Something broke within the transmission because the shift linkage is OK and the shifter moves about freely. Swapping the transmission, according to the owner, is an 8-hour job due to having to remove the torque tube and possibly the rear differential housing. Good thing I would not need it right away!

I spoke to a Peugeot parts supplier from Canada, who said the diesel transmission has a different input shaft when compared to the gasoline transmission. I can't help but wonder how much it would cost to have the current transmission repaired or if a shop can transfer the input shaft from one to the other. Anyone have any rough estimates?

Hard to estimate when it's not even known what's wrong. It could be possible that a section of the linkage just fell apart ($) or maybe it broke a shift fork internally ($$$).

I think it's internal. The owner says he checked the linkage and says they appear to be OK.

In reply to SpitSix:

That's so cool! You wouldn't happen to have any spare parts lying around, would you?

On my 405 when I checked the linkage it appeared to be OK. After more investigation one of the links was totally gone.

The 505 will have a different type of linkage being RWD but it is possible that it may take a more in-depth look to see if the linkage is good or bad.

I had a 1985 model, same drivetrain. I loved that car and I'd own another in a second. It was just fantastic on the highway. Slow as dirt from a stop, but man that turbo diesel would run effortlessly at above legal speeds.

The milky oil on the cap is probably just from condensation while sitting. I'm sure it hasn't been driven much since the trans is stuck in third.

My 405 had some milky oil under the cap that was cured by some hard driving while keeping it at temp for awhile.
