14 forester ... It sounds like poorly adjusted valves from both sides of the boxer but only when hot. On a cold start its quiet. No glitter in the oil. Should i try something heavier than 0w20? Its never been quiet since new but this is definitely louder than i remember!

Well, only about 10k on this motor. The car has 110,000... just before 100 we did an oil consumption test due to a recall, and the shortblock was replaced a total of three times. Two of the replacements had rod knock. This doesn't sound like rod knock to me, and I'm trying to avoid going back to the dealer. The shortblock is now out of its 1-year warranty period.

That's OK, there are expensive Porsches out there that sound like Subarus.
