Well, either I've been banned, or that threads Beem ghosted, cause I can't see it either. Guess I hit a nerve.

Rolling coal amuses because half the time they think their truck is gonna be fast but then it just dumps smoke and noise and doesnt really do anything. Bros have tried rolling coal on my zx but they cant ever seem to catch me. Ive seen a couple get pulled over for it before so there is hope.

There's a number of rednecks in my family, and at one point I fit the bill as well. There should be another class of redneck: The "stupid-ass, self-indulgent, mouth-breathing, waste-of-humanity, SOB" variety. Certain people and groups are granted automatic admittance. Coal-rollers are right there. They make lowriders and Harley guys look good.

It's actually a violation of federal law, specifically the Clean Air act.

Liz Purchia said: It is a violation of the [Clean Air Act] to manufacture, sell, or install a part for a motor vehicle that bypasses, defeats, or renders inoperative any emission control device. For example, computer software that alters diesel fuel injection timing is a defeat device. Defeat devices, which are often sold to enhance engine performance, work by disabling a vehicle's emission controls, causing air pollution. As a result of EPA enforcement, some of the largest manufacturers of defeat devices have agreed to pay penalties and stop the sale of defeat devices. The CAA prohibits anyone from tampering with an emission control device on a motor vehicle by removing it or making it inoperable prior to or after the sale or delivery to the buyer. A vehicle's emission control system is designed to limit emissions of harmful pollutants from vehicles or engines. EPA works with manufacturers to ensure that they design their components with tamper-proofing, addresses trade groups to educate mechanics about the importance of maintaining the emission control systems, and prosecutes cases where significant or imminent harm is occurring. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/epa-coal-rolling-short-answer-illegal

The problem is enforcement.

Here's the fun part looking for that article:

Yes but there's doing it and then there's doing it and being an ovbious shiny happy person about it.

I live in California so I try semi hard not to run afoul of the CARB rules real obviously. Those idiots rolling coal idiots seem to proliferate out here even with the added restrictions.

I don't understand the attraction to it in the same way I don't understand hella flush or donk or whistler tips or massive useless poorly installed body kits or under car lighting.

Maybe I'm just old.

A carbed 70's Mustang that's running rich is just a BIT different than 90-foot plumes of acrid, black smoke blown into open car windows.

But you knew that already.

I'm not surprised the thread is gone. FTE is notorious for being a dictatorship by the management over there. I wouldn't even bother with it were it not for the sheer number of members and the relatively good search engine.

as somebody who has an allergic reaction to diesel exhaust, I will be glad when the coal rollers go away. There is something about it that upsets my crohnes to no end.. to the point where I will do anything I can to pass a truck that is putting out too much smoke.

Most of them time, I do not even notice diesels, but school buses, dump trucks, and coal rollers all seem to really affect me badly

Of course I was serious. I made no mention of 70s carbs or 90foot plumes of smoke, so no idea why you got so specific. I simply stated that the majority of us are in violation of the same law, which is a fact regardless of how visible, or how much worse for the environment you think one is compared to the other. That being said I do think rolling coal is stupid.

I guess it just seemed you were analogizing back there. It appeared (to me at least) that you were saying "we're all as guilty of that violation as the guy in the video" by virtue of "most of us" violating that very same law that he was breaking.

If I was out of line in my interpretation, my apologies.

Truth be told I could care less about the law.... Mother nature is way harder than we are. I care about the repercussions about these toolboxes assaulting other people with this crap and the potential for my family to get harmed as I drive what is often considered a target.

Hahaha, best post!

If you believe the room temperature IQ intellectuals over at Slate it's a bunch of conservatives showing their displeasure with everything that's right with this country.

That is only true a significant minority of the time. Most of it is not political in any way. But unfortunately there are enough people out there proving steretypes correct that if you were a betting man, you could make a bit of money on the bet that any time you see a diesel truck blowing smoke it is driven by a younger white male who only speaks one language, comes from a conservative family, who also owns some kind of civil-war era Confederacy paraphenalia but probably couldnt pass a 10-question quiz on the constitution. It would be nice if that idea had no basis in reality, because i am less annoyed by people who have stupid ideas about fuel tuning than by people who have stupid ideas about the role of government and what 'freedom' means in regards to other people's rights.

to the average person that only sees their car as an appliance to get from here to there and thinks that cars that make any noise at all are nothing but noise pollution, there is no difference.

with all the emissions checks most of us have to endure, I really doubt that most of us are in violation of the emissions laws …

there are still OEM cats on all my vehicles …from brandy new Sonic to 23 yr old "race" car (even though it's the only one that does't get checked … though ST rules still require a cat)
