After finding my wife an 05 Audi Allroad to drive, my truck is having some deferred maint. sneak up.
Just found an Audi Q7 awd suv(?) for a beater price.
Learn me!

I assume it it taller than "my" Allroad , since it is an"suv", but then, marketing, so...

The 05 wagon, with its high strung (for a dd) 2.7TT needs 91 octane, and gets ok mpg. Rated to tow 5500 lbs, but I'm leery of towing my tall camper... low wagon + tall camper = air dam!
The 2010 Audi Q7 seems to be rated for a bit better mpg and more low end from a non turbo bigger cu in v6; hopefully on 87?

And also rated to tow 5500 ( my camper is 4100, loaded) but I'm hoping the big air dam can be overcome better?

 Thanks

That age should have the 3.2 but for towing your camper I would go with the TDI.

Unfortunately, the one I can get, with 180k and some body damage, for a beater price does not have a choice of engine. I don't have the financial ability to shop around for anything. I'd love to own a diesel Audi - in fact, I could probably work on it easier than the 2.7TT in our 05! But, not in the cards.
Judging from the 05 (only Audi I've ever driven) I'm assuming the AT is going to be the weak spot for towing, anyway.
Aside from the diesel, looks like the '10 was available with two different v6s. Don't know what this has.

I have an '11 Q7 we specifically purchased to tow our Lance 1575 travel trailer. I don't know if the drivetrains are the same but there a coupla things to know about the Q7. First of all, it's a beast: >5600 pounds curb. They, like all Audi's require premiun >91RON and the Q7's like a lot of it. Daisy, our Q7 (my wife named her) gets about 16 in town and 20plus unladen on the road if I can keep my foot out of it. Nice, solid build with a good interior. I don't know how they do as they pile on the mileage since Daisy has only seen 100k under her wheels. I imagine the '10 you're looking at has considerably more.

Daisy is running the 3.0T motor good for about 300 ponies. With her not so inconsiderable heft, she doesn't accelerate with authority but when towing can still make good time at the expense of gas consumption. About 14 is the best I've been able to do pulling Lance. Lance is a small trailer and weighs about 4k loaded.

I've had lotsa Audi's over the past 40 years and they seem to start to become problematic maintenance-wise after 150k or so. Stupid E36 M3 like window switches and not-so-stupid like transmissions. Some models are extremely difficult to work on and others not so much. Daisy is going to be due for new control arms and dampers soon and I'm not looking forward to that exercise.

If you're not dyin' to get a Q7, I would look hard at the larger GMC rigs like the Yukon/Denali. They are not going to drive as well nor will the build quality match the Audi's but they run on regular and will pull down similar numbers when towing.

We have one. An '08 Quattro with the 3.6. 228K.

I don't really know a lot about it. She bought it in Germany new.

The only thing I would say is that the age and mileage we've got on the car are starting to nickel and dime us to death. Typical German issues. Electrical seems to be the first to go.

When it's running well it's a good car. Comfortable, powerful. We've never towed with it (I wouldn't want to).  It's a German SUV. Exactly what you would expect.

I agree with rdcyclist. The American SUVs will not handle as well, but will be easier on the budget.

I did not include my disclaimer about how bad my life is circling down in the toilet, as I assumed the folks on here that think a "beater" is a 5 digit price, and can afford that, were tired of hearing that from me.
I stumbled across this, for close to scrap price, and wondered if it would tow, so thought I'd ask.
Moot point; just finished this job, a week and a half early, (although I asked a few days ago how early this was going to end, and was told "we will be here at least to the end date if not longer")

So I can't even afford it at scrap price.
If I could afford any running GM full size, I could afford the several thousand in deferred maintenance on the one I own.
Here in so called "treasure coast" the camp sites cost as much or more as a room, (and either takes every dime of GSA, or more, most places) so the car was ok... but I could save money on the next, could I get my camper to it. Only camper small enough to tow with the car, was rear ended on I85 and totaled it and my wife's highlander... still have not received all monies from that, and all of it together would almost pay for one of the "beaters" I've been recommended to

I'm truly glad many folks on here are doing well, financially

I'm also  truly blessed to be debt free. I could even borrow money for a nice truck. But unlike too many poor Americans, I'm aware enough to know, that I can't afford to pay those payments.
Fortunately, despite closing in on retirement I can't afford, I'm still blessed to be healthy enough to continue working.

I'm not tired of hearing about it (and I'm sorry you are struggling).  It seems to me it doesn't really matter how good a car is in your situation. Just that it runs, and is cheap.

Just keep it on your radar that older Audis aren't known for being low budget from a maintenance perspective.

Good luck!  I hope things turn around for you soon.

I had to look up that lance; 3280 advertised, is quite a difference to 5600!!!

But, after dealing with around a couple hundred RVs these last 45 years, that not uncommon!

My current is a bit longer, but no slide. 3400 advertised, but after getting to sloppy water damage repair out, and fixing the whole camper with $1200 in lighter stuff, I'm 3100 empty, and about 3900 loaded!

So, I think the Q7 might have worked.
As I said, the 180K, and some bad (all cosmetic) body damage, was why I came across it for almost scrap money. But, moot point now, as I'm headed home while I look for next contract.
When I posted the question, while at work, I didn't have time to look at the engine options... saw a 3.0 gas (didn't know turbo'd -know that be 91 or higher) , know it isn't diesel - just the engine would be worth over twice the price! And a larger V6. Don't know if that's turbo or not. The non turbod Volvos ran on regular. Don't know about a non turbod Audi!

All just info questions now.

Got a few thousand on the Allroad so far, and although it was a lot more than scrap price, it's a known GRM 😊

Even it was offered up for sale to any GRM, for 1/2 to 1/4 the beaters I was being recommended to, and it's much nicer than most of them... just a 240K mile Audi waiting for the other shoe to drop!

fortunatly I've owned,  and maintained my own, around 300-400 cars trucks motorcycles and trailers!
So yea, I can't buy any projects I can't have on the road with just my labor in about a weeks time, but "brand" or nationality, matters not at all, and longer than 6 month reliability doesn't either!
I hope I have time to swap the front springs off of a 400k mile parts truck onto Big Red before I find a next contract! Then I can tow my camper! (Big Red , after fixing other things that might be it's wobble, might have a crack in a spring) hopefully the high mile worn out springs, will get me to a couple jobs, to set aside enough to buy replacements!
