So some of you may know I was thinking about selling my 83 Plymouth Sapporo. My guess is it will be a difficult endeavor, but here is an interesting wrinkle. My friend who really wants it,but can't afford it right now due to being unemployed for the past 2-3 months, but back to work now called me last night with an interesting trade proposal.

He has a really nice, but clearly not perfect 1971 NSU 1200 Automatik that he bought from the original owners widow a few years ago. I have seen it maybe two times in his garage, and absolutely loved it. It looks like a BMW 2002,but cooler. It is blue, with tan colored interior, and runs from what he told me, but needs rear brakes(easy fix he says).

The car can be seen here:

He says if we do it that he gets right of first refusal if I decide to sell someday which I agreed to. What do you guys think I should do? I am leaning towards yes. Oh yeah I still want to buy that Mitsubishi van I found a few weeks back as well.

That is nice Chris, I would be tempted also, IMHO it has even more "WTF is that" factor

It would be trading one dead brand for another even more dead (is that possible?) brand car.

Take the Sapporo out of the equasion. If you had to dig in your pocket for cash, it the NSU what you want?

What 914 said

Also, can you even get parts for the NSU?

Yes you can get parts. It is essentially a Audi I believe,or Audi absorbed them. I have wanted this car from the time I first saw it,but never thought he would part with it.

Parts are even easier if you swap in a 'Zuki 1200 engine.

I dinno man, the Sapporo is sweet... but I've never even HEARD of an NSU before. I'd lean towards that.

I'd do that swap.

In my opinion, the NSU is cooler, funkier, and potentially more valuable.

The NSU Prinz also seems to be quite prolific in the European vintage racing scene, so maybe there's speed parts more readily available than you'd think.

That ought to answer your question right there. Do it.

I think I'd make that trade. Both are nice cars but the NSU is wild.

As long as parts can be found for it, it sounds like a square trade. If you really like it go for it.

Yep, i'd do that.

My wife loves that little car, thinks it is so cute.

PS: You may do well with the ladies with the NSU.

...and here I thought I'd heard of every car, then this pops up, you sir have a penchant for the unknown and unsung vehicles of this world. Damn I'd rock that NSU if for no reason you'd have to spend 5 minutes explaining what it is every time someone asked what it is

Automatic, but has stick?

Automatik /= Automatic, duh.

Does the NSU have an NSU engine? Apparently, when the Wankel engines in these "died" many folks swapped engines from other brands into them. In Europe, a popular swap was the Ford V4 (same engine, I believe, used in V4 Saabs). I have no idea how difficult the swap to a Mazda engine would be, if needed. The "weak link" in the NSU's engine was the same one in the Mazda's...the seals on the apex of the rotors.

Wait wait wait... they were ROTARY and that weird? You need to buy that, or trade for it, or kill the current owner, but you need it. NAO.

It's like a Beetle automatic - basically a TC autobox that is too stupid to shift itself.

I'd do the swap.

ArthurDent Reader

I don't believe that is rotary - 600cc two cylinder engine from what I remember.

I would trade.
