Spot wrapping braided lines

While I would love to disassemble a bunch of my braided steel hoses to put heat shrink on them to protect them, there are really only a few spots that need protection because they are touching other things that should not be rubbed by braided.

Does anyone see a problem in cutting some shrink wrap and then zip tying it in small sections for protection? It may "shrink" due to heat exposure of being in the engine bay, but if I get wrap that is a little larger than needed and overlap it, any shrinkage should be contained, no?

Thoughts?

I use rubber hose. The braid WILL cut through almost anything - Obviously, try to route so there is no contact. (We know this, right?)

Shrinkwrap won't protect much from rubbing.

Yeah, with stainless braided lines, the thing you have to worry about is whatever the line touches. I had an oil line eat about 3/8" through my rear master cylinder on my bike.

I use rubber hose with some nylon ties holding it on. Also, I try to tie the hose off with a couple nylon ties. One around the hose, and another under that tie onto whatever is near, or even another thrown into the mix as a chain. That way it is nylon tie against the hose and nylon tie against whatever (push rod tube, frame, etc.)

The spiral wire wrap works great also. Looks cooler than split sections of hose. At least imo.

Since we're on the subject of wrapping things, I need to wrap my shifter cables. Actually, I need to replace the broken plastic outer sheath layer, then heat wrap them where they run by the turbo. I'm thinking of some plasti-dip tool handle stuff over the bare steel parts, then maybe some heat shrink over that, but then I need something to keep the heat off of all of that so it doesn't happen again.

I already picked up a little bit of rubber hose at Ace. Does Harbor Freight sell the spiral wrap? I might be making a trip there in a few days.

Spiral wrap for the win. Besides looking good if applied right, it will take abuse and last. Also, anything that's used on aircraft has to be cool.

Dunno. But Radio Shack does. $4.99 for a 10 foot length.

Some ace hardware stores carry it. Its around $3-5.

I have a bunch of kevlar/fiberglass heat insulating tubing that is jacketed with high temp silicone. Amazing stuff at keeping the hot and dirty and the clean and protected in. Got it on e-vil-bay for next to nothing.

Hey opel guy stole my answer! But i got mine from McMaster-Carr. It siled over #6 AN lines and i use it on ign wires on the 392 hemi.
