Does anyone know what year they switched from having the starter mounted with one bolt and one stud to using two bolts on the ej25? I think it was 1997, but I'm not 100% sure. I need an awd 5 speed with 4.11 final drive to bolt to an ej22, but there are very few cars that came with the right one as far as I can tell.

I believe you are correct, 96 was the switch year as the old A/T that came out of mine was studded, Currently swapping an 02 3.90 WRX drivetrain in and im going to do it while the transmission is still out to make life easier.
My 03 WRX has 2 bolts.
my 1997 Impreza L had 4.11 5spd, same for OBS up to 2001.
It also works totally fine to drive around with a single bolt through the starter.
