I found an 84 CRX in really good shape for what looks to be a good price. Recent paint and rebuilt head. 153k miles.

The kicker is that with the current budget it would mean parting way with the 87 CRX Si with D16A1 in the garage that was going to be the challenge car and the 84 would be the new challenge car.

Plus to the 84 is that it's in much better shape. Plus to the 87 is that it would be a much faster car.

What would you do?

I'd stick with what you have.

Isn't the '84 a carb'ed motor?
Is the '87 FI?
I would stick with FI.

The 87 has the engine out of an 89 integra. It is FI.

Additional information on the 84

Seller said: I bought the car about 6 years ago. It was originally red with silver on the bottom.   I painted it and had the head reworked about 5 years ago.  I rebuilt the carburetor last weekend.  I replaced at least one of the cv axles.  The car is all original except for a CD player and the paint.  The car has never been wrecked to my knowledge and has a clean title.  The motor has no unusual noises and runs good.  The 5 speed transmission and clutch work good.  Everything on the car works except for the air conditioner.  As far as I know the motor and transmission are original.  The body does not have any dents or scratches.  The car has always been garaged since I have had it. I have not driven the car more than 500 miles since I have had it.  The tires have good tread but need to be replaced because of their age.  The tires are extremely noisy.  Since the car has a carburetor and is not fuel injected it tends to be cold natured. I would prefer selling the car to someone that is mechanically inclined.

"Better the devil you know than the devil you don't." The 84 may seem to be in better condition, but it will have it's problems too, and may end up being more of a basketcase. I say stick with the 87.

Sell me the 87 cheap and then buy the 84! J/K (kinda) I'd stick with the 87 rather than jump into another unknown car.

I'd also stick with the current 87.

I made an offer on the 84. If he takes my offer I may buy it and keep the 87 as well.

Little more info that I didn't include in the original post. I have had no time to work on the 87 and am not sure it would get done to my satisfaction before October. Two kids under the age of 2 in the house can make shop time slim.

The 84, although slow, could be ready in a weekend and sell for double my offer after October.

I would then run the 87 for 2011.

Buy both. If the '84 is clean, it's a perfect DD. When you're tired of the carb, megasquirt it. Or, swap the engine and other mechanicals from the '87. Sounds to me like a perfect situation.

My offer got shot down. The owner said he was offered his asking price plus $200 by someone out of state if he would hold the car. He's not available to show the car until Saturday and he's pretty much going on first person to hand him his asking price in cash gets the car.

I think on ebay the car would easily bring a grand more than his asking price.

I bought it.

There's a picture from the ad in the link in my signature.

I'll take some more pictures tomorrow in the day light and have you all tell me what you think is worth before I tell you what I paid for it.

The 87 is sticking around. It's going to get torn down and built back up the way I want it and hopefully make a strong showing in 2011.

Don't be a hater.

That was his asking price. He had no idea what he had. He told me he had close to 100 emails about. He also had people offer him more than his asking price if he would hold the car.
