Specifically regarding the E250 found in the Toyota rav4, are all E series parts interchangable?

Are their any good resources specifically regarding this line of transmissions that could be recommened. I have scavenged threads but it seems the E250 is a bit lackluster in internet information.

I just recently acquired a 1st gen Toyota FWD RAV4 and I just have this dying urge to turn it into a decent handler! It certainly needs an LSD :)

You want the trans from the Caldina or Alltrac.  It will bolt right in.  The speedo connection is the only real concern, but the axles may take some parts bin swapping.  As for individual parts, don't bother with it.  Just swap the whole thing.  I have an extra sitting on the shop floor now.

There's something different about the RAV.

In reply to Dr. Hess :

he said his Rav4 is just FWD so i dont think he's needing a AWD trans

You still use the same AWD trans.  You just block off the back output.  They do that for the MR2's all the time.

Good catch, yes, so the idea is I definitely want to keep if FF largley because of weight, and to see just how much hilarious fun I can have with FF on a very non car like platform

The diff should interchange between all E series gear boxes.  My friend is actually organizing a group buy with Mfactory to produce an E-series LSD as we speak, if you want to jump in on that.  I sent them a stock open diff a couple years ago to reverse-engineer from, but never had the time to try and get 10 people together.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/2260070744208038/

The Rav4 E-series is considered a “narrow gear” transmission vs. the 3SGTE/V6 versions which are all “wide gear”.  This refers to the thickness of the gears 1-5.  Many things inside the “narrow gear” are is slightly different as a result, including the case itself which is smaller overall.  This makes it ultimately not quite as strong (but still very strong!) but easier to use for swaps.

I’ve never worked on a Rav4 but I have a fair bit of experience with these gearboxes as I have one in my Escort :).  The one I use is from a 00 Camry V6 – wide gear but with taller ratios than the GT4/MR2.  I can try to help with any more specific questions you might have.

Thank you very much for sharing this info. This may be an excellent option to go.

Several questions:

1. Regarding the narrow gear transmissions like the e250, what would you estimate their horspower and torque limit to be?

2. Are the gear boxes similar enough to where the e153 lsd could drop right into the e250

3. What is the locking characteristics of the MFactory diffs? That looks extremely interesting!

Is that group for Mfactory still waiting fore more people. I'm turbocharging the 3SFE engine and a LSD will help a great deal. If it blows, I'm going V6. Who am I, I'm mensajero. If you been around RAV4, I think you might have seen me in RAV4world.com, and in Facebook.
