Good morning,

Looking for a reliable and economical place to purchase a world class T5 rebuild kit. I want to replace the blocker rings, syncros, bearings, etc...all the small wear parts. I only 'need' the synchro for 1-2, but if I'm going to have it apart I want to rebuild it.

I have seen kits on amazon and ebay for around 250-350, but I don't really know what im looking for as far as material/manufacturer etc. Any guidance in this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

D&D Performance out of wixom iirc, you can try hanlon Motorsports out of PA, or even G-Force Transmissions out of PA.

Most if what you're looking for isn't listed online anymore. Best to just call them.

I have not done any price shopping recently, but have had good experience with parts and service from The Gear Box in the past.

The T5 in my mustang is, allegedly, an Astro Performance rebuild. Been a while since I have done research on the matter but, they are supposed to be a quality purveyor like G-Force.

I am interested in what you decide to do since I will likely be opening mine to diagnose sudden onset 5th gear problems.

i see "the gearbox" rebuild kit shows brass syncro rings for 5th, and carbon fiber for 1-4. why? what is better for performance and drivability? what is OEM syncro material? will CF change my fluid requirements?

im such a n00b at trans stuff.

I have dealt with Cobra Transmission, AMP Distributing, Allstate Gear,  and Transmission Parts Distributors.

Links below.

AMP also sells via Amazon. Not sure about the others?

Funny I'm in the process of buttoning up a Fox Mustang V8 T5.  I converted it to 1996-2004 Mustang 3.8L V6 specs.

That  involves installing a  11/16" longer input shaft and  a .73 5th gear.  This makes it  easy  to install behind a hopped up 2.8L V6 in a 1974 Capri using a Mustang II 2.8L V6 bell housing.

Almost all T5's Non-World Class or World Class came with brass Syncro rings.  I do believe the very late production versions installed in the 2005-2009 Mustangs got the fiber rings for 5th gear but I'm not sure 100%.

If your trans used all brass rings then use "gear lube"  but if yours has the fiber lined rings then you'd better use ATF or the trans won't shift correctly.

I have always use Mobil 1 ATF but some others have said GM's Syncromesh fluid is also good.

If you have any questions on these transmission drop me a note.  I have some spare parts and extra parts for them.

Two items required to set these trans up  correctly are the spacers required to set the bearing preload on both the counter shaft and the main shafts.

These spacers don't come with most economy rebuild kits and you can't do a rebuild without them!

I also have a number of "on line" links for specs and "how to's" to rebuild them.

I even printed off the complete T5 repair manual and have it saved on paper in plastic sleeves all in a binder.

There's also a number of Your Tube videos that cover this trans as well.

You will need a press of some kind.  I have the HF 12 ton version and that does fine.

I've repaired, rebuilt, or just set up near a dozen of these trans up to now.

Anyone need a Camaro V6 T5 trans?

In reply to jimbbski :

mine is definitely a WC T5, with the needle bearings under the gears, which is why im told you have to use ATF.

i haven't been inside it yet, so i don't know what material the blocker rings are, but i think the 87-88 T-birds were brass.

is the fiber better?

In reply to jmthunderbirdturbo :

Those years TBird T5's were WC and only the 5th gear syncro would be made of brass.

Hands down the best place to get parts. Call him and tell him what parts you have and what you're doing and he will piece together the most complete kit. I had a funny situation (putting GM gears in a Ford case but using the ford shafts), and he was able to set me straight and get the right parts.

You'll need to log in to post.
