I know very little of jet engines but i do know people make them out of turbo's in their garages on youtube

I was thinking such a DIY centrifugal jet might work for an "APU boost" type setup...

We talked about those, but they still require budget dollars to build.  Solid rockets just need a tube and something to light them off, they're nearly free in budget terms.

Another one I forgot to add:  a parking lot build-off including a "grade school kickball" style picking of teams by the captains.

I actually was going to email Tom to see if I could get his approval so the GRM forum could challenge Marty, Moog, Turbo Yoda, Tuning Fork, and Mechanical Stig to a parking lot build off.

I thought the junkyard build off was a pretty solid idea.

I thought there was an NHRA reg against "multiple motors", iirc?

but, I have an oft-repeated hatred of most rules sets that's more than ~5pages

The three I really like other than rockets due to fuel cost.

Fly and drive from Anchorage Alaska.

Drive a LS powered truck tow vehicle and swap the engine into the car on the trailer in the parking lot. Then put it back into the truck to drive home.

Parking lot build off has been a long standing idea that I fully support.

Just gonna leave this here. https://www.vintagekarts.com/Rockets/Rockets.htm

and a question on this- how does a rocket propelled vehicle behave when pushed to the tire limits in corner? There won’t be any pavement tire killing, just a heavy end of the vehicle. Neutral?

Hmm...  Rockets give me some interesting thoughts on thrust vectoring and maybe extra downforce for the autocross, provided you could manage adequate burn time.

I think the saabute was onto something. A tow vehicle class, where everyone has to do the event dragging say a Leaf or Prius or Volvo wagon (heavy and boxy) behind it. Autocross and drag.

In reply to rslifkin :

Begin afterburner when brake pedal is lifted, runs until WOT. Not a bad idea.

The real question is whether it will do enough to offset the weight.

Thrust directed rearward unless braking or turning. Thrust is directed up in those cases.

Make it a bit more random by everyone throwing a wrench into the pile and then splitting the one big pile into smaller piles.

You end up on the team whose pile has your wrench.

You could accelerate at full power while cornering at the lateral edges of the traction circle, because the thrust doesn't go through the tires. Same goes for air brakes - you could slam dedicated air brakes while cornering at the limit and maintain control.

I had to pretty much chain down a previous team mate to get him to stop considering peroxide rockets.

I worked at the time for the craziest man I’ve ever met- owner of a chemical plant who routinely took on weird custom chemical jobs with the potential to level 10 city blocks. He burned the plant down 3 times.

When I asked him what he would take to do peroxide rockets, he was genuinely scared, and said no way.

I still think your boss was either a wimp or undereducated on peroxide jets. Seriously, I learned a bunch on the internet and they are fine.smiley

The worst post challenge idea is 100+ posts of arguments over the concours.  Every.  Year.

A coworker is negotiating with someone he knows about getting a J79 jet engine that was last certified around 1960 for scrap money.

Might be good in the 1/4.  But autocross would be a no go.

I’m going to be really disappointed if you don’t show up next year as Voltron, FYI.

I'd be a liar if I said I hadn't been trying to figure out how to get enough hydraulics under budget to make a transformer. Heavy equipment is expensive.

This x1000 I posted over there twice and now I think they are just arguing in circles.

Bad ideas are fun, can’t wait to build the straight 8 car.

Our transformer/power rangers/Captain Planet ideas were extremely bad on the way home, but yet awesomely gimmicky.
