I don't think any motorsport is going to switch to robots, really the question is more about which sport is going to be first to ban them (and F1 effectively already did). :)

I don't know, but you've given me a terrible idea.

Could one, potentially, create a "virus" that makes autopiloted Teslas go all dorifto all the time?  I know I know, they have very good security blah blah, but come on... it would be fun!

great story  and smart guys ......

now if they can get a USB memory stick  download the program and take it over to the next Tesla.......

Incredible. We can figure out how to make a self driving  car do donuts, but we can't make my ####ing Apple TV respond when I want it to. #### you, scientists. #### you, shoddy engineering hacks.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. The idea is to make the feature and then sell it to Tesla owners to install themselves as an upgrade!

I bet you could sell thousands of upgrades at $20k a pop.

Also, get a tire company to sponsor your initial r&d so you don't have any startup costs.

I feel like that's an interesting coin toss between "get sued by Tesla" and "get purchased by Tesla"

Extremely cool - for about ten minutes. Give me some good old-fashioned failable human-based suspense please.

Which websites would you have to get your car to visit?

It isn't a motorsport once humans aren't involved. It's a technology demonstration.

Distribute it via the Supercharger stations and have the cars do a big Ken Block donut around the owner as soon as they unplug.

Are you infering that drifting is in fact a Motorsport? cheeky

Is a picture taken by a drone/robot/satellite considered photography?

Your car already goes to those websites and just doesn't yet understand what incognito mode does and doesn't do.

Drifting is a judged event, like gymnastics so yes?

What happens when a boxing match or MMA fight goes to the judges?  Their performance is rated by judges so I'd say those are certainly sports.

I dont drift, well, not as a sport or competition, but thats how i look at it, even though its not a race, with cars, it surely could be considered a sport with them.

I drift my Torsen equipped Miata every time it rains

Sure is. Photography is just taking pictures. If you're asking if it is art, I'm not qualified to judge.

Joking aside. Driverless drifting maybe one way to get me more interested in drifting. Right now my interest goes no further than the latest Ken block video. But two or three robot cars, running independently and drifting inches apart is something I would be interested in seeing. At least until the technology matured then I would lose interest again.

When drag racing launches became cheater automated with cameras and electronics, and then traction control, the question is why have a driver, it is not needed.  Nobody would come watch perfect runs.  I personally suggested they not allow rebuilds between every run so engines blowing up would be a risk you take and become more likely in the final rounds.  They ignored my advice. ;)

Wait, do we simultaneously believe that driverless road cars are far off because they aren't yet good enough, and also that driverless drifting is already too boring because without the human there is no error?

Is drifting easier than driving to work?

I'd be very interested to watch AI racecraft or "driftcraft"...

How can I poke at the other driver to force a mistake? I can outbrake that car into turn 3. Etc.

Amazingly enough, I'd say it's orders of magnitude easier than the hard problem of fully autonomous driving on the public road. The biggest factor for any kind of autonomous "racing" is they're on a closed course, with a set layout, and little to no obstacles to navigate.

It's still pretty technically impressive, but that Delorean demonstration is kind of easy mode when it comes to autonomous driving.
