I changed the wipers on Subarust for the winter, and a new battery a few weeks ago (that one not by choice). But I'm a little tired of the wipers slapping the sides. It isn't even consistent, sometimes the A pillar, sometimes the bottom.
Is there a cheap fix that doesn't involve parts from the dealer made of Unobtainium?
I had the same problem on our Honda. It was the linkage bushings. I bought a universal kit at the flaps, it had some that looked like a match but they didn't last long. I'm gonna try rockauto for originals.
I'm not even sure what causes this, on the old cars I've seen the wipers' range of motion is mechanically limited, I'm guessing it's electronically controlled on newer cars?
You could just buy my Subaru, it doesn't do that. 
Why would you fix that?

That really shouldn't be possible, unless there is a whole bunch of slack in the linkage and the wind causes the change. I suppose if the nut at the base of the arm is slightly loose, the arm could shift occasionally so it would hit the base for a while, then the pillar.

The Opel already sold, it is now being built for rally america.
I agree that it is probably the nuts that hold the arms on, check to make sure they are tight.
I had that problem once when I bought wipers that were too long, but I'm sure that's not your case.
